Google, in their ever changing view of what they deem right vs wrong, rolled out a major search engine update that was christened the "Penguin" update. It affected search engine rankings for many honest/legitimate business that ranked "organically" (mean their sites ranked naturally for give keywords for their sites).

The update was geared at trying to remove web spam and penalize those google felt were "cheating" the system, but instead, took out a lot of legitimate businesses.

From a business perspective, if you are not ranking in the top five of google results for a keyword, your earnings are typically very low.

At position 1, and two, you can expect exponential earnings over position 3 - 5, especially if you have an attractive site, a good price, and provide the information buyers need to make an informed purchasing decision.

In my case, and many others, I had ranked position 1 on google, yahoo and bing for years, for many variations of my businesses keywords. When that update hit, I lost ranking for many (10+) variations of those keywords, and the main three keywords I ranked for, dropped dramatically, from position 1 to position 5 -10.

A succession of updates from google over the next eight months, saw continued ranking decreases. What was once acceptable, in terms of links to your site, was suddenly deemed unacceptable by google, and trying to undo years of hard work, especially in backlinks to your site, was a monumental undertaking.

Slowly, I've made headway and many of the terms that dropped off the radar have returned to page one. Still, my best ranking is position 4. From where I was, prior to the update and where I am, over a year later, is a 3/4 difference in income. Where before, I made $xx k per month from my businesses, I do 1/4 of that income now. In most cases, it's just enough to make ends meet (which I'm grateful for), after all those hard years of working to build my online businesses and rank naturally.

It was a rude awakening, to be sure. Many people who had worked so hard for so many years, to build a business and leave the workforce, were put out of business by google and in an economy that has seen persistent 8% unemployment for nearly five years, not counting those that dropped out of the workforce and gave up (that would put it closer to 16 - 20% unemployment), it devastated many families.

It's essentially what allowed me to take nearly a year off to build Pancho and afford all the parts for it. At that time, my businesses were on auto-pilot. I could spend an hour or two in the evening to take care of customers, and had plenty of time to work on the truck during the day. Those were the good ol' days and I'll gladly sacrifice a year or two of hard work to get back those days!

WOW. I had no idea. Nice kick in the stones! Have you rebuilt to withstand further updates? Hope you're back on track at least somewhat. How much of this went to further Google's own interests?

Well, here's an update- 50 lb of compression in Cyl. 3 and 5. Assumption is blown head gasket from the overheat. Going up to trailer it to my house tonight. I'll try, but I dunno about this new pic jazz.

Aw, I'm no expert, but we've done more than 2 of these. I'd feel terrible botherin' Vic, though he'd be happy to help.

Flyin' Ryan and I got off work and grabbed his FIL's super killer tilt bed aluminum trailer, and ran and got Yeller, which Boppa had reassembled the ignition and gotten parts for. Then we returned the trailer and got Blue, popped the wheel on the S-box and ran it down to Neighbor Donnie's. Then we backed Yeller in and got after it. Time from ign shutoff to heads on the floor-1 hour. Yaaay air tools! Boppa's taking the heads to the machine shop first thing this morning to be pulled down, mag'd, surfaced, adn reassembled, should have them back tomorrow PM. Hoping to Pop it back together in the next couple days.

Overheat was back in May, hot enough to pull the neck out of the rad. Redid the cooling system on that one.

That must have been one hell of an overheat, I hope the damage isn't severe.
A little tip, the next time he thinks the truck is starting to overheat turn the heater on full blast that will help cool it down a lot faster than just shutting it off.
I would like to attend the Nats but my truck isn't done yet and I would enjoy it more If I had something to show and give rides so maybe next year.

Update- after some shenanigans, we have heads. Spent the last 2 evenings reassembling everything with nice new fasteners and whatnot. Hoping to fire it tonight. FR came over and was a big help with setting valves. Been a while for all of us. Fighting light and gauge issues in the dash, fried a printed circuit last night. Hope to be further along tonight.

Was there much damage to the heads from the overheat?

Both cracked. There was a 3/4" chunk of gasket missing between 3 and 5... They were 993's from the 70's, pretty common. We were trying to get some hi perf ones but it fell through. We have fully rebuilt 882's now. 190 psi in all 8, good to go!
