I found out what was leaking. Once the timing cover is installed use THREEBOND 1217H sealant at the front of the timing cover lip, they are two piece and they are not sealed just spot welded so oil gets through.

Seems epoxy would be a more permanent solution for where the spot-weld seamed pieces meet vs relying on silicone/sealant solely. Always wondered about this area myself as it seems both front & rear of GM based oil pans are chronic leak prone.

Well she's back in the saddle again. Ran it for about 10 minutes. Still have to go get the exhaust hooked up.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
Thanks Joe.
Removed the rear end cover and letting it drain, maybe tomorrow I'll re-install it with "The Right Stuff" after I get it all clean.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
So after snugging the bolts for the 12 bolt cover I used an inch pound torque wrench and started at 25 inch pounds. Per this post I then went to 45 inch pounds and it seems almost too tight. https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...51&postcount=2

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
So I took it over to get the exhaust re-done due to the new manifolds at a local shop and on the rack.

I think it did, sounds just perfect for me. They really took theyre time on making sure it was run correctly. I'm happy with the work.

Beautiful truck!
It's a good morning when you can have your coffee and read through a few pages of a great build thread. Thanks you Sir, and good morning to you. Time to heat the shop... |

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
I changed the jets and metering rods in my Street Demon to a tighter tolerance recently to get better mileage and my plugs showed signs of too fuel. I went two sizes smaller (not good).
Boy did I go too tight for my engine, I could hardly get down the street. I then put the smaller metering rod back in and was able to drive it, but it wanted to go into passing gear too much (looking for more fuel) when I sped up, I mean way more than normal. Plugs are now dry though Now today I receive the next higher rods and jets, 2 main and 2 secondaries (and gaskets). Should be the ticket. Should have gone one size lower to begin with, live and learn I guess. And wouldn't you know it. Got the parts, they sent One Jet in a package that was supposed to have two in a pack. They are sending me out a new set today.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
This is how to decide on the tune....trial and sometimes error...lol....
Every once in a while I make an adjustment or two...just to return back to my previous settings. It just to me confirms where you need to be....Good work |

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
Yes, with a carb like this metering rods and jets are all you have after you adjust vacuum, timing, idle. Takes time but I think I'll be happier doing it the hard way.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
I think I finally got that carb nailed down. Kept the 78's Jets and put in the 60-52 rods and she doesn't kick down when I get on the road all the time. Only when I make it kick down. I have to wait a while to report my mileage as right now it seems embarrassingly high.
