Re: New 64 Stepper Project
Until I get mine all back together I am guessing when it comes to tyre size and the amount of coils to lop off the front end but, if it comes close to what you have achieved, I will be a happy camper.
I am wavering between a 225/70/15 and a 215/75/15 both on a 7" rim but that purchase can wait another month yet. P.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
So I drove out to the new So-Cal shop in Waco this weekend it was 56 miles round trip and I got 17.9 mpg. The route had 65 MPH, 55 MPH 60MPH and city driving stop signs to and from. I don't want to go any leaner. Still have some choke tweeking to do though. It's a process.
I guess I'm going to find a local job now cause I need the gas money.

I wasn't sure if that was good or not. I was getting like 10mpg when I started.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
Over 16mpgs for a 350ci/auto trans/3500# brick is impressive for a carb set-up.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
I'll have to pull a couple and see. When I first started this they looked terrible, too much fuel.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
Nearly 18 mpg is great especially doing 70mph. Sounds like she's dialed in. If it starts easy and burns clean... great job.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
Any more details on the carb you're using?
I'm familiar w/the Demon brand but not so much their current product line & that particular model. Is it for a spread-bore intake or standard Holley square set-up? Easier for tuning vs. Q-jet or Edel/Carter style? What about vs a Holley?

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
It's a Street Demon 1901BK. Square bore. Super easy to tune and work on. I hate working on carbs but this one makes it a pleasure, if you can call it that.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
When I changed the metering rods from 60/52's to 58/50's the mileage went from 18 to 12. Albeit the quick trip I checked it on was only 6.2 miles up and 6.2 miles back and I passed a slow-poke on the way up. That may have hurt it some.
You know the deal they were doing 50 in a 65 on a two lane road, I had to conduct a high speed fly-by. And then starting out I had to floor it to get into traffic. On second thought that whole run was completely different than the rest, too short ect. I'll try again latter.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
Ya I don't see it as normal either. I checked timing, vacuum etc. as soon as I got home, ensured everything was snug. Doesn't seem right to me either.
Hey on a good note volts are awesome.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
10.8 mpg after a 30 mile round trip. I might be off a bit because I'm using a wooden dowel dipstick and a ruler instead of the gas gauge.
So in the AM I will put the old metering rods back in and see what the deal is. I just feel like at 18mpg it's lean as in no balls engine wise. Better today for sure. Oh on another note I went to the Waco So-Cal store show where they had a car show. They had six plaques for awards. I received Best of Show Truck and Fan Favorite.

Re: New 64 Stepper Project
Man, you're going to need a dedicated shelf for all the awards you keep getting. Congrats!

So I dropped in the 60/52's today drove 15 miles to the lake, turned around put the AC on and drove back. 15.4 mpg. This drive had a stop sign and a turn around. Driving 65/70 mph then into a small townish area 35/40 to the turn around and back. I should add that it is a hilly route to and from so a lot of extra accelerating trying to keep the speed the same. Just doesn't seem as good with the 58/50's in it but I will live with it for now I guess.
