Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Now, back to the build.....

Paid for a factory tilt tonight. It's supposed to be ready to bolt in other than paint.

Then took the carb off the engine. Intake looks clean too. Looked under the truck and decided to try to get to the body shop earlier next week to do the last things I want to do with air tools. The undercarriage is fairly clean and the bed cross sills are very clean so it should look very nice all painted up under there. The only thing I need to do suspension wise is new shocks although it rides very nice they look bad and are 40 years old (spirals in the front at least) and I already have new kyb shocks I scored relatively cheap off ebay to go on it. Found the ones sold for the 4/6 drop are the same as stock according to kyb on their website and verified it with some guys who've used them before.

Someone's going to get a nice truck that's going to run well and look good...I'm thinking I might be able to get a little more than I first was asking with the new additions...(tilt/tach/restored interior/350/350combo) I guess we will see....

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Anyone notice a difference in the valve covers? I want to find another like the one in the first picture to make a matching set Not sure if it's just a stamping issue from the factory or someone grabbed two different ones...

nope, just went out in the garage to make sure and the first one has more of a rounded end and the stamping lines run down over the edge on both sides. The second one pictured is more squared and the stamping lines fade out on the top...not even getting to the edge...

I have a pair of valve covers like that first one if you want them. Just pay the shipping. Need cleaned up and painted, couple small dings in them.

Sounds good....pm me when you get a shipped price.
I have another single one coming but would prefer to have a backup if I find these aren't sealing good...got new better valve cover gaskets on the way too...

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Anyone catch my most recent for sale ad?

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=526612

Yep, I'm selling the truck.....

The project continues

I am purchasing OLEBEATER's project truck...a 72 SWB

I had an epiphany last night while browsing craigslist. Found his ad:
Quote:
1972 Chevy C10 short wheelbase, NO MOTOR/TRANSMISSION; UNFINISHED PROJECT; clear title; cab has new rockers, cab corners, cab supports and bushings; new front inner fenders and core support; doors, front fenders, hood and glass are good; new 2.5" drop spindles and 2" drop springs; new ball joints; new 4" rear drop springs; ralleys; many extra parts; stepside bed; p/s and p/b setup;
When you look at the pictures you'll realize (minus the bed being off in the pictures-which he's putting back on for transport) that it's in the same basic condition as my truck is...cab has had rust repaired, no engine, no tranny.

However this truck has some advantages to me....

5 lugs with disc fronts
drop spindles installed
drop springs installed front and rear
New ball joints
Frame has been sandblasted and painted already...
PS/PB setup
Extra front end sheetmetal
Extra parts to sell

Oh...and the little fact that it's a SWB

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Basically I'm going to be at the same point in the build but this will save me a few days on the frame even if I need to touch it up or decide to add some contrasting paint...

And the biggest reason of course is since I plan to sell the truck....being a swb will net me thousands more vs a comparable lwb truck...

I personally like long beds but the market shows it...from ebay, the classifieds here, and craigslist I've seen that nicely restored longbeds generally sell for 6-8K.....comparably equipped short beds 10-12K+....it's a no brainer in my book

I am planning at this point to swap the step bed for a fleet bed or sell the stepper outright and buy a complete repop fleet bed...but I'm still thinking on that... of course if someone came to me wanting me to finish the truck as a step bed...well, I will finish it as a step bed

Got to keep you guys on your toes around here

thanks...I guess

I've gone through two layoffs which forced two projects to be sold and other times have come across deals that I just couldn't pass up. If I had a truck with sentimental attachment like yours I wouldn't easily part with it...I really wish I had the 72 patina truck still but needed the money to finish my 71 blazer project....

This, like I said, is a no-brainer. I will have the same or less invested in the project once I sell off the lwb parts...and will end up with all the advantages of the swb frame...

Gotta love the SWB! Good luck with the new foundation. Was this a local truck, or are you having it shipped?

Good luck with the new truck, I dig the SWB much more than the LWB.

Thanks, that's why I made the switch. Even if it cost me 1000 more to start at this point (it won't) it is worth it because so many more people prefer restored swb trucks and the money isn't even close when I go to sell it.

The final decision was watching a recently restored lwb truck for sale on my local craigslist and a couple other forums. It's about 10 minutes from me. They have over 10K in receipts (not counting labor) and couldn't get any offers at even 7K for the truck....to me the truck was worth 8-10K but the market didn't show that...but I see SWB trucks still selling for 10-12K so as I said...it was a no-brainer....

...if this truck was going to still be a driver for me I would have kept the longbed for hauling more....but the plan on this for the last few months has been to sell it...

I trying to do a little research for my build and this is where I go. But I need a little help. Your inspirational pic you posted in I think the 6th page, I have saved since the day you posted it. Now, where can I find a few more pics of it? by the way, I'm sad to see it getting sold.

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

sorry, that's the only picture I have of that truck...not sure where I saved it from....either here or c10forum.com

I'd like to keep this as a nice driver...but my family's finances come first and in a number's game....a lwb loses over a swb every time when it comes to re-sale

I understand the family finance situation. My wife been out of work for the last 2 years. We sold her Traiblazer last week to help save a few bucks. Thanks for all the inspiration on your build though. I hope things turn around and you find a good one that you can hang on to.

Make the switch to fleetside. I love the stepside bed but if your plan is to make money then the fleetside bed trucks have a higher NADA book value, sell for more and have more people out there who like them. All things that will help you make the most of your investment.

thanks, definitely planning to run a fleet bed on this...as I said..the only way I'd keep the step on here is if someone contacted me about building the truck for them and wants to keep the step. personally I love them like Stella Mae and a lot of other nice ones on here...but I totally agree and understand short fleet is the way to go for resale...
