Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I've had experience with Por-15 before with great results. If prepared correctly it's really durable. You can hit it with a hammer and it doesn't chip. You can paint it with a brush, and dries like you sprayed it on. Like you said it's not cheap. I have to check out Zero-Rust to see if it's as durable. What do you guys know?

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I have a gallon of the black Zero-Rust that I plan to use on the frame. I also bought 6 cans of the red oxide to use in smaller, hard to reach areas so I would have an opposing color to make sure I had good coverage with the black.
If I ever get to the frame, I'll let you know how it turns out. (You'll probably beat me to that point though.)

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
It looks good, and I like that it comes in colors. I wonder how it will resist road chips compared to Por-15.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I heard that.
Joe, nice progress. You remember our discussion on the durability of my painted frame? You said your truck will be on some dirt roads if I remember correctly. If your can hit por15 with a hammer and it won't chip, I think I know what my choice would be. Good luck with your decision.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I'm thinking of painting the frame with the Zero-Rust because it comes in colors, and the suspension parts with the black Por-15. That's what will chip the most. Plus I already have a quart of the Por-15.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I used the POR15 and it withstood a Bobcat blade without scraping through to the bare metal.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Without going on a Sales Pitch for Por15. My plan was to paint anything and everything under the truck that is subject to boucing rocks and road salt. As well the bottoms of the cab, inner fender/exterior fender, bed supports and frame. I'm sure Rust Bullet and all the others would work as well, but thats my plan for now.
I didn't take pictures, but when I tried to bend the hairs on a brush after it sat over night the handle snapped on the brush before I could bend a brissel. Keep in mind the temp was 70 or so degrees so it had a good chance to harden. It would take longer to harden if it was cooler. I've never powder coated or sprayed automotive paint so I don't know if I would of had the same result. Just don't get that stuff on you. It does not come off easily. |

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
That would make a cool custom Ice Cream Truck. Something like this one. But more hot rod type not low rider.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I called Zero Rust today. They won't even sell to me because I live in California. He told me it is like Por-15 and is chip resistant, and can be painted on with a brush. You must prepare it correctly, and it needs 2 coats. I tried to order it through the web site, and it went through. The web site said nothing about California not being able to order it. I paid through Pay Pal. We'll see what happens???
