Restoring Rusty

Hi everyone I have been enjoying driving Rusty to work all week, truck runs great. The first thing I’ll be doing is restoring the wood grain piece of trim on the dash. I’ll show you guys how it comes out, maybe some of ya will want to get yours restored as well.

Yes, my dads a painting contractor and I have been working with him for years. We do interior, exterior, cabinet refinish, epoxy floors, etc...

I redid the woodgrain on the piece of trim, but I rushed it and the clear coat shrunk the base coat under the stain... I am re doing it but with this weather I am having to wait days in between coats.

I hate when that happens. It did look good though. Do you think you can just sand the clear and respray?

I ended up stripping it and did it over, I went lighter on the base coat and it’s looking better this time.

Lol yes, for now. the truck will be going in the shop for some body work and paint after the holidays

I thought about putting a supercharger or turbo kit on the 4.8, but both kits cost more than a ls2 from a tbss with a t56 set up set up from a local junk yard, so it looks like I may be going that route instead

What color did you end up using?

With paint work coming what color are you thinking? Staying with lime green or another color.

For the base I got a can of Krylon “satin brown boots” and for the gel stain I went with Old Masters golden oak. For the clear coat I am using an Old masters Spar-marine varnish rattle can in gloss.

I am still undecided between some kind of orange and the lime green

Hi everyone, it’s been a long year, sorry I haven’t updated y’all on Rusty. Rusty has not been kicked to the curb, I am in the process of getting body work and paint done. It has been at the shop for about 5 months now but I hope to have it finished within 2 months. Right now it’s almost prepped and ready for primer. I am going with the original Lime green by the way. I really do believe these old trucks have soul and character, Rusty turned right on after being parked for months. I can’t wait to show you all when it’s done with paint!

you can use a free product called IrfanView to rotate and save your pics prior to posting to ensure they turn out up right, it sucks that we have to do that but that's the iPhone world these days

They are finally starting to spray Rusty! I will upload some pics here in a minute, it keeps logging me out when I try to upload photos

down to bare metal…. Rusty is finally out of the spray booth, time to wet sand; buff and put it back together. Shout out to Gregski for really cleaning up the truck his hard work does not go unnoticed
