Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Pictureless update (pics tonight):
Used the fender roller to gain as much space as possible without flaring the fenders and the 8" wheels just aren't going to work up front. There is a 7" version of these wheels available with 1/4" more positive offset so I will gain 3/4" of clearance to the fender. Gonna have to switch to those and probably a 215/40 instead of the 235/40's... Oh well, it'll be easier to steer... |

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
coulnt you machine the rearface of the rims by 3/4 inch ?
that or mount skinnier tires making the rim stick out more than the tires that might be enough to clear the fenders the germans do that a lot to there cars to get the wheels about flush with the fenders http://www.cardomain.com/ride/585696/5

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Yeah, thought about trying a narrower tire but I don't want to mess around with experimenting anymore... Shoulda gone with a 7" rim to begin with, just thought it would be nice not to stagger. The 7" with 215/40's should be perfect.

I do like as wide a stance as possible on a "sports car," but I'm not a huge fan of the flush look with the wheels begging for curb rash. Uploading pics to photobucket now.

im the same way. i like a little meat between the wheel and the curb. maybe flush with the fender lip, but not sticking out like some of those.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Passenger side mocked up. This is the ride height it settles at now:
But no room to steer... Tried to make room: Not gonna make it with these wheels. I was tempted to start a flare but I resisted and went in to research wheel options. The 8" wheels are out and 7"ers are on the way. Decided to check out the "full dumped" look: |

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Too much to list
Wish you could. That would mean it drives! I like the stance too. Might be a bit lower with all the fluids, interior, driver, etc. If that's the case I may have to raise it a tad. We'll see how it settles out. |

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Well, I am waiting for the 7" front wheels. Have a few loose ends to tie up in the front susp. I needed to take a break from the front suspension effort since it has been my focus for too many months now so the wheels were a good excuse.
I decided to figure out the tank/fuel pump situation. Dropped the tank and pulled the level sending unit. Pulled the pump/sending unit from the S2000 tank. Thought I could possibly run the S2000 tank but it's too deep; would hang too low. Since it's deeper the fuel sending unit is also taller. Did a little re-engineering of that to lose about 1.25 inches. Also mounted the Sunbeam level sensor to the S2000 sending unit assy and wired it into the Honda plug. Still need to transplant the flange from the S tank to the Minx tank. Side note: Article on F20C swaps with the project is out in this month's Practical Performance Car. Barns & Noble carries it. So far I have not seen the new issue here, but it should be there this week. Side-Side note: Picked up a '68 FJ40 with SBC350 for my wife. No, it's NOT another project! (but it does need a couple things...) Last edited by Frizzle Fry; 03-28-2012 at 03:58 AM. |

Hopefully you meant an '08 FJ40, not a '68. Otherwise it IS going to be in your sig line as a project!

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Definitely not an 08 "FJ Cruiser" Too bad about the color, but the price was right...
Back to the MINX! Here are the gas tanks side-by side (Honda left, Sunbeam right): Senders pulled: Honda assembly before shortening: After ~1.25" reduction: Sunbeam level sensor mounted and wired in to Honda assembly: Full sweep: Last edited by Frizzle Fry; 10-04-2010 at 01:43 PM. |

My bad for the FJ comment. I thought you meant the late model version.
Like you said - back to the Minx! (But hey I just boosted your post count by 3!!) |

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
even though i'm not partial to the color, the FJ looks good! looks nice and solid. i like the fenderwell headers too. gonna find a hard top for it i'm sure so the wife can still drive it in the snow
and did you have to use plastic weld for the sending unit?

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Came with a hardtop plus bikini top and soft doors. No hard doors though. Fnderwell headers are going. Ramhorns and a single flow 40 are in the works.
I reshaped the plastic with a soldering iron to make new clip tabs. Was nice to work with something other than metal for a change. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
You are my hero, one awesome car in the works here, and my favorite vehicle as a kid. Still have a dream to own another FJ40, or an FJ45, those are awesome. I remember splashing through puddles with my dad driving in the FJ40 and using a huge welded bumper on the front to run over trees and clear our back yard. Keep us updated with the FJ40. It's all looking really nice!
Edit: Also to include a completely radical FJ45 build for you that you may be interested in, check this thing out. http://speedhunters.com/archive/2008...y-hot-rod.aspx
