Re: 198Plus build

Yes and yes on the paint and undercoating. Per the factory assembly manual, undercoating was applied up to 21" from the outside body lines toward the centerline and the backside of the sheet metal was painted the body color.

Re: 198Plus build

As most of you have probably guessed already, I'm no longer doing any work on this restoration. Don't worry there is no bad blood. The cost was getting to be more than he wanted to spend. Ronnie is shopping around for cheaper rates. We still talk from time to time. I asked him if there was anything I could do to improve the way I did things. He seems to be happy with the way I treated him. He was screwed by 2 others shops, I just wanted to restore the trust.

Good luck Ronnie on your remainder of your build.

Re: 198Plus build

Alan's absolutely right, he done me a great job !!!!!!!!!!!! Like he said it all boiled down to cost, not that he charged to much his rates where very reasonable at 40 an hour especially for someone of his knowledge and workmanship as y'all all know. I had to slow down on project because of money.Alan kept me updated every day with pics and documented the hours he worked every day on a spreadsheet to my e-mail.
My opinion of Alan......he's a (Class act)

Re: 198Plus build

IMO, if Alan was only charging you $40/hour. Put the truck on hold till you can pay him to finish. I would be very suspect of anyone charging less then that and still providing the quality work. Unless you find some guy that just doesn't need the money and is doing it for fun.

I charge only $40/hour also. But not really. Depending what I'm doing. It's more of what I think it's worth. I'm also doing it for extra cash. Being semi retired my only complaint is I don't have much time to work on my own. That's the fun part.

In my defense I didn't charge for every hour I worked on it. I tried to show my appreciation of him letting me work on his truck. . Overall there was 10-15 hours not charged for the work done on the stepside and fleetside bed.

You charge like me. If we went in business together we would go out of business.

I like that part. So you say you charge by the hour and then just charge what you think it worth. Nice And thats the fun part. I guess I was thinking about wrong you could be charging less then you worked. What would be fun about that?

Re: 198Plus build

I could charge only $10/hr for labor, but charge 4 times the hours it took. The Honda Dealers used to pay there Techs $12 to $15 per flat rate hour. But they charged double the time it should take. At BMW we got between $20 to $28/hr and our flat rate time was closer to how long it would take to do the job. This was in 1990 the last time I worked as a tech. At the time that Dealer charged $100/hr. Even though we got a small percentage of that I still made almost $60k a year.
