That burning snow flake came from when I was in Germany and our unit was going on a week long ski trip down to the Bavarian Alps. Our Commander kept saying it was going to be Ski Hell week, and the image of actually skiing in Hell came to my mind, where it was so hot that the snow flakes would actually go down in flames....
In my mind I call it the Flaming Snowflake, to write that or say it out loud seems to make dubious references to alternate lifestyles that I am not prepared to contemplate, sooooooooooo Burning Snow.
Kinda sounds cooler too.

Yes I know I am weird, I get that a lot.

Thanks for taking a look, and making the time to post guys I really appreciate it !!!

Wait till you see what I have cooking on the work bench right now!!

I dont suppose you would like to take a drive up to Hope, and look at/buy that 1973 Chevy rollback for me?
I am waiting on the owner to call me back now, so we can discuss some details.....

If all you needed was a good SSG, I could certainly be that for you.
I am a 68D = Surgeon's Assistant/Operating Room Tech.
In the 80s I was a 16R = Short Range Air Defense Artillery Gunner on the M167A1 Vulcan.
Come next August when I (hopefully) start clearing this place I will only have one year left.
Unless they pick me up for SFC......

I am glad you like the vid, and thanks for taking a look!!

**********************************************************

Ok ....I got the dash extension idea from 65 old school, his is orange, pinstriped, and has AC vents in it, and turned out sooooooo cool looking that I could not help but be inspired !! You can see it here:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=510107&page=6

So for me it all started with cutting a donor piece of sheet metal out of the most incredibly ugly green fleet side pick up (Thanks Ddubs !!) and taking it home, making my infamous patterns, and cutting, beating, bending, tweaking....oh yeah, we call that "massaging" around here.

At that point it looked like this:
Name: 13may12 dash extension (3).jpg
Views: 622
Size: 91.0 KB

That was 13th of May, and by the 28th it looked like this:
Name: 28may12 dash extension (3).jpg
Views: 623
Size: 41.1 KB

and a quick mock up, and it looked like this:
Name: 28may12 dash extension (7).jpg
Views: 612
Size: 47.5 KB

After that it was set aside to make way for more orderly items.
Finally after I installed my engine, and pulled it back out again (where it still sits waiting for some attention), I decided it was time to finish SOMETHING instead of just pinking away at odds and ends. At which point is when I started to "finish out" my cab.

In the mean time I had gotten a bit more savvy to some of you guys skills and tricks, as well as more tools and as I work my way down from the ceiling in the cab, it was finally time to bite the bullet and either install the dash extension or chuck it.

Oh ... but wait .... wouldnt it be much easier to work on if it wasnt in the cab yet?
Yes, and that decision added on a lot more backwards planning on my part.
Then we dug in...
First thing after making sure it was as straight as we could get it, was to weld an addition backing plate to the inside of the thin body sheet metal. My reasoning was due to the fear that some of the controls I was going to be mounting in it would warp it with weight and vibration.
Then it was a matter of planning the placement of the controls, which side of the steering wheel, what order, and spacing.
I started with the p-side of the steering column, and came up with this:
Name: 01jan13 slugger bits test (1).jpg
Views: 608
Size: 50.7 KB

I made up a dummy test panel to see how the Slugger Bits I got were going to perform for my needs.
This turned out to be a critically good move, as the holes were all aligned and spaced very nicely dead center of the spaces needed by the controls to be installed, and level.
What I did not take into account would be the appearance of the control knobs, and how they would play into all this.
As you can see in this mock up:
Name: 01jan13 slugger bits test (3).jpg
Views: 622
Size: 47.2 KB

After seeing this, especially in the photo, I spaced each of the controls from the 4-way flashers out an additional 1/4".

"I have come to learn my own little mantra for welding stuff like this.... it goes a little something like:

"Weld a little, grind a little............ Weld a lot, grind-for-freeking-EVER !!!!!! AAAAHHHHHAGAAGGGGGGGG""

I have to agree. I have had all these emotions in a five minute span before on a simple weld job.

Doin' a great job keep it up.

Thanks Coulter, I got the steel rods yesterday. I should be adding a little bit of your influence to this build this weekend!!

**********************************************************

Well by luck or foresight, as you see I welded up the shorter p-side of my dash extension first. This turned out to be fortuitous in that it was easier to manipulate into being mostly vertical according to my level. I realize this is subjective in regards to the stance of the frame, but it still gave me a good reference, and base by which to mount and align the longer and harder to wrestle d-side addition.
This piece of angle iron I used help to keep me on a track of sorts.

When doing this stuff I have to constantly remind myself that "being dead on straight" is not the same as "looking like it is straight" I think the guys that really excel in these builds are able to achieve both of those goals somehow...
So after welding comes a little bit of mud....
Name: 13jan13 (3).jpg
Views: 547

and more down the line.... I dont know why exactly I added those "dog ears" that continue down the kick panel from the extension. I think I just wanted to be a little off center field with this whole project....

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

After some sanding and primer, I guess it looks pretty straight...

That bit-o-pizza box, is the pattern for my side panels where I will mount the 5.25" speakers.
Like my Tempest I wanted to do a bit of a pop up to angle the sound up and out from under the dash.... usually my ears are not down there, especially if I am driving. (and if by chance my ears ARE down there when I am driving well I am probably not worried about how the sound is....because I am probably doing more crashing than driving.....you know, just sayin)
Name: 13jan13 console side (4)a.jpg

Since I wanted to be sure the visual effect for these side panels was effective, you can see they go pretty far up under the dash.
Name: 13jan13 console side (5)a.jpg
Views: 869
Size: 48.3 KB

Oh? what is that pencil drawing on there you ask?
Well my speakers didnt come with covers to protect them, so I thought ......gee whiz..... why not just cut something cool out while I am jacking around with this stuff! After all, if I dont like it, I can just cut it out in a circle and nones the wiser !!
Here is the whole project as it sits in the cab right now while I work on these side panels.
Name: 13jan13 console side (7)a.jpg
Views: 858
Size: 52.4 KB

This is again a test cut for the detail on the speaker guards, just to see how well the plasma cutter would handle the job since I am doing this all by hand and dont have a CnC table or anything cool like that!!
Name: 13jan13 console side (8)a.jpg
Views: 861

Hmmmmmmmm I think I can work with that !!

As always guys, thanks for looking !
I have a 4 day weekend and have plans to get some more stuff done !!

Looking good! Really like the idea of a dash extension, wanted to do something like that like 13 yrs ago when i used to drive this truck but didnt really know how to go about doing it. Wish I had one of those plasma cutters after seeing how well they work in one of your last videos.

Your dash extension is growing on me.
Really dig the speaker covers. I usually have to go back with a flat/round file to clean up my edges after free-hand plasma cuttin.
Im still shooting for getting picked up on one of those truck build thingys.
