Re: My long term 57 project

Well guys, I finally had some spare time to install the Altman door latches. It took some time to get everything lined up and adjusted, but now they work great. The doors are much more secure and don't rattle nearly as much as they did before. The cab feels much tighter too.

I went with the long panel option, it lays over the stock door panel between the raised ribs and wraps around the end. The instructions are good and easy to follow and the kit came with all hardware needed.

First cut was made after laying out the supplied template on the door panel. The first 3 pic's show the template and the panel after the cuts and with the latch loosely in place.

Then following the instructions I marked out the cut lines on the passenger door. The window channel touches the door, so you must be very careful making the top cut. There is also a reinforcement panel behind the door edge that needs to be trimmed away too.

Re: My long term 57 project

Man, I REALLY like the color! I like how it's a deep Cardinal type red at least in the photos. JJ, can I ask if you know the material name and color number? Is it leather or vinyl? I'm pretty sure I'm using vinyl. Look SO good.

I Like the door panels. Keep us posted on the Altman latch progress, I may be doing the same.

Re: My long term 57 project

All in all the Altman latches went it fairly straight forward. I did have to take the door panel on and off several times to get the right bend in the long actuating rod so that it doesn't bind against the door panel.

The biggest problem area for me was with the latch and striker pin. The pin has a hex head with sharp points. The problem I had is that one of these points was making contact with the back of the latch and was keeping the latch from completely closing. I could here metal to metal contact!

My solution was to open up the mouth of the latch giving it just enough room to work! I think if Altman made to sticker pin with a round head with a hex socket, like the older GM cars, it would be a cleaner install.

Re: My long term 57 project

That looks great!! Did you integrate the speaker grill into the stock seat? If so, that seat will go perfect with the dash swap.

Re: My long term 57 project

Yep, I had a seat custom made using the 60 Impala speaker grill and the materials and pattern of the 63 Impala. It turned out amazing!!

Re: My long term 57 project

Wow, that looks fantastic! It kinda looks like the factory seat but modified for the grill insert. Or is it entirely custom? Either way, it's gonna look SO good
