Thanks, looks like the guy getting the cab is going to have me fix the rest of the spots and prep for paint so might put a slight delay on the swb project but will add some extra funds to it...

Got some A/C delco plug wires in today...when I was looking online I found them for cheaper than most of the import wires...and they are made to run under the corvette manifolds so most guys say they will fit our trucks with headers nicely without having to custom make wires....

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Bed and one of my frames are on their way for a nice father/son build. Good people. Hope I can get them to join and post pictures of the build and their 58 apache.

Here is the truck acting as temp storage......without a bed. Struggled with the hitch removing it and after moving 1/8 turn with a breaker bar every time I decided to wait till I get it at the shop w/power tools. Got the bumper brackets unbolted but wouldn't clear the sport license bracket and I didn't want to unbolt that (have a guy wanting it as is bent up for a farm truck build. )

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Got everything in to button up the engine
Matching valve cover
New felpro oil pan seal
New nice valve cover gaskets (don't want leaks-to me kills the value as well as the paint)
New skip white hei
Plug wires previously mentioned

And the headers. They look nice and must have good ceramic coating because they had inadequate packaging but no sign of the first scratch. Just two clear bags over the headers with no packaging between them. But as mentioned thankfully there was no damage.

Either end of this week or beginning of next but I'm debating whether I send it directly to the body shop or bring it home...

I would bring it home, take a bunch of pics and inventory what you have before it goes away to paint prison.

Thanks...I REALLY need one running....hopefully this build will allow me the money at the end to be able to buy a work truck to keep...

I would worry about that because of all the paint prison horror stories, but I'll be going daily to work on the truck and don't plan to have it there for more than a few weeks...

...however...I might just bring it here since the frame is already done...get the motor/tranny dropped in and set up the drivetrain...then be able to drive it to the shop for body/paint work....that'll make it easier for him and me at his shop if it moves/stops under its' own power....

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

my guess is that the more prework you do on the truck the less time it takes to spray on the colour
most time is lost in prep and when you want a high end paintjob they realy have to hunt down all the little greases scratches and dents , nobody likes sanding and thats why they usually only do it for 2 hours a day or so before moving on to other projects

I totally agree. We did 5 coats of primer on my blazer to get it smooth. And we thought it was going to be good after the first coat but it takes a lot more to make it smoooooth

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Last night I ended up going by harbor freight as I wanted a torque wrench for torquing down my oil pan w/out over tightening and then the intake on my other engine. I had one and know I put it away properly but went to use it the other day and it won't adjust. Was a $75 one years ago. Got the 9.99 hf coupon and will try it out. Have a friend who works as a mechanic and uses them at home and has his snap on rep test them with his snap ons he uses for work and they are always within spec even after a few years so its worth the savings to me

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

While I was there I saw them preparing for the sidewalk sale. They had the 90amp welders out front. Ended up getting an unopened return for 75 and paid 19 for a 2yr free replacement warranty. Got a cart for 30 and an adj auto darkening helmet for 35. Figure with all the projects I have and plan to have its something I need to invest in and be able to hone on my welding skills on. I've been waiting for a great deal on a nicer one but this will do and when I do find a nicer one imk sure I can sell the complete setup for 100-150 and recoup most if not all of my investment. Now all I need is a big 2stg compressor and air tools and a press and a torch and..............................................

A bigger garage...

Having it running would be a big bonus and help it get done sooner. I hated having to push non-runners around in the body shop. It made it hard to want to work on them so they invariably took longer to get painted.

He told me it was no problem but I think that was just him being nice...so my plan will now be to get it running then drive it down to him. Will also give me time to shake it down and get the drivetrain and wiring done and cleaned up before paint so I don't worry about scratching fresh paint with it....just worried about how to properly paint the firewall if I have the engine in....might have to see if he has a good way to lift the cab off at his shop....I know his lift is a drive on though so I'm not sure if he has a way other than 4 guys

try to wrap most of the visible wiring before installing it maibe using sumtin like clear plastic tube that you can slide over it and tear off later , that should prevent overspray

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

My body shop was able to paint the firewall with the engine in. The 2wd trucks usually have the engine mounted forward and have a little more room behind them. But mine didn't have the brake booster or heater box on either, which gave them a bit more room. BTW, a single stage compressor will work fine for 95% of home garages. But your next purchase should be a gas bottle for that welder. A welder and an air compressor transform a garage into a shop.

That's a good idea. I got a bunch of the blue painters tape on clearance years ago so I'm planning to use that.

My engine was in the forward position too so hopefully that will work. Definitely leaving off anything until after paint.
