You can get LED 194s that are pretty bright if you look around - stock is 2 or 3 candlepower, for reference, so get twice that and you'll be fairly bright.

You can also line the backs of the gauges with silver foil.

On the cooling issue, both dual fans or a clutch fan should be able to cool it. All three would be best, if you can thermostatically control the electrics.

Dude, you have to stop getting hung up on this fan thing. I did not say your fans will not work. You said that no way would a clutch fan cool as well as your $400 fans and I was trying to explain to you that that is not a correct statement. I`ve tried to explain it a couple times but not sure your getting it. You`re fans might be just fine but a good clutch fan set up will cool a 600 bbc like its a stock 283. My experience with electric fans was not good. but to be fair they came on the car so I didnt install them. But others I know have had similar issues but just dealt with it.

As for your headers glowing red, yes that will break down metal pretty quick. That means you need some timing in that thing. Dont worry about your total timing at 3000 rpms right now. Get the correct initial in there and then play with the mechanical advance parts to get the total.

No experience with Lokar but their linkage looks nice. For a "hot rod" I dont like a stock type shifter. Too easy to miss a gear when you shift it manually or accidently throw it in reverse. The Megashifter works great. Do you have the regular version or the truck version? The regular version will work, it will just sit lower. If you dont like that dont run out and but the truck version because they are the same shifter. The truck version just comes with the taller bracket and a taller plastic base that you can buy seperately to raise yours up.

I think part of your problem is you are trying to do multiple things at once. Or at least it seems that way by the way your are writing it out here for us to read. Do one thing at a time. Get the boots set up so that they dont touch the headers. You may need some plug wire heat wrap to help. I`ve never had a issue myself when using 90 degree boots but I`m not there to see whats going on. Once that is done then work on getting it timed correctly. Once that is done then worry about your shift linkage.

I always encourage people (including myself!), particularly newer guys, to wrap up one project entirely before starting the next. Otherwise you wind up with so many loose ends and unfinished details in each of the little sub-projects that it gets tough to manage.

Not everyone works the best that way, it's a personal choice, but for me things get too chaotic for my simple brain if I've got 5 outstanding, unfinished projects going on the same vehicle at once.

When you only have one to deal with at a time, the is much closer.

Alright I got a cobalt bit and an extractor, and a tap to re-there's the hole so I'm going to work on that. Also got more plug wire boots so that's project 2. Then I'll deal with timing and tuning.

Re: Starting my engine build

Wasn't successful getting the broken bolt out, even with a cobalt but and extractor. But I installed new boots, bolted headers up and only have a slight tic which will drive me crazy but I'll fix it later. All plug boots are new and free of headers.

Running temp while idling for 20 minutes never went over 180* on the autometer gauge. Thank goodness for that.

Everything is done except shift linkage. I'm working on that now, then I'll change the oil and filter to regular motor oil.

Also trans temp gauge never went past 100* so it was fine during break in.

Re: Starting my engine build

One thing I don't like about the light truck megashifter is that the console part that makes the whole thing look good is so long. It's the perfect height, but if it was shorter (from front to back) I could mount the shifter a little further from the bench and closer to the dash. Thinking about making a my own box with a couple cup holders instead of using the plastic box.

Re: Starting my engine build

I got the linkage all hooked up and working great. All fluids are full and everything is back together. I went to back out of the garage and when I put it in reverse, nothing. Cycled all the gears, nothing. The dipstick on my th400 says check while transmission is in park, and fluid shows on the crosshatch part of the dipstick when I check it with truck running, and in Park. Vacuum line going from intake manifold behind carb to the new modulator on the trans is hooked up and brand new.

When I took the pan off, I replaced the filter, put the new Derale deep pan (3.4 extra quarts) and replaced the modulator and linkage. All seemed fine to me.

What the heck is goin on with this thing?

Did you bolt the converter back up? Did you make sure to spin the converter while installing to make sure it was seated correctly?

Yep. Put a quart in it, put it on and felt a think, turned it a little and a second thunk. Then when I bolted it to the flexplate it pulled out a little to reach flexplate, just like it should. Any other ideas, thanks man you are appreciated

Re: Starting my engine build

When I installed the new trans filter, I used to filter extension that came with the pan, bug also used to bolt that hold the filer up. With the bolt holding the filter on the stock pan and stock filter extension the filter sat flag in the pan. With the Derale filter extension on and the filter bolted the filter was at a pretty big angle

Is the shifter linkage adjusted correct?
When the shifter is in park is tranny in park?
Same deal with low or first.
Vacuum modulator hooked up?

Just throwin' stuff out here.

Yeah I checked those as well. Modulator hooked to intake vacuum port behind carb. I put the shifter in LOW when I hooked up the cable to the trans as per the directions and the trans was in low as well. Everything hooked up great

Re: Starting my engine build

This is why it was previously mentioned about finishing one thing at a time, rehook the stock system to rule out anything you have changed or modified and not doing multiple things at once, Better to have concentrated on the engine until all the bugs are worked out and done, this includes the stock transmission, shifter, oil pan and pickup, and the stock cooling system. Once it all works like it used too, then install the shifter, the pan, the electric fan, the radiator ect....

Without it running unhook the shifter and manually shift the transmission by hand to be sure it shifts into all gears to check all detent's, rehook the stock linkages and make sure all the detents engage with all positions on the shifter, It helps to have a helper to watch the movement.

If it shifts into all the gears the problem is elsewhere, that leaves anything else you changed or modified, the pickup tube not picking up oil? Check the modulator hose at the tranny end? maybe that shifter

The pickup tube was upside down, which angled the filter so much the pump was suckin air.

How do I put up videos from my IPhone??
