Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Time for some LED headlights, spendy little buggers.
After that i decided to hook up some wires to the front lights. Pleasant way to spend a Sunday, in a warm shop with country music. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
I have 2 systems. PSI harness for the engine and Painless for the rest, lights radio etc.
Since the PSI has everything on the engine covered I'm thinking I won't use several wires from the Painless harness. they include: electric choke. regulator exiciter. alt. regulator - - PSI has wires that plug into the alt. coil + ignition- hot - LS has 8 coils all plugged into PSI temp sender - PSI has a plug into the temp sensor tachometer to coil. oil sender - Dakota Digital has a seperate oil sensor and wires. cooling fan relay - PSI has a wire for that relay and the other is to switched hot I'm thinking I won't use these wires, thoughts? |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
I’m planning to use the ignition coil power as the switched ignition to my EFI computer on my truck. Electric choke feed could be repurposed as an accessory ignition feed.

I spoke to a speed shop/ tuner person, and he agrees I will not use the 8 wires I have listed so re-purposing them will work. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Wiring means you are getting close to driving it. Keep at it.

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Wiring (to do correctly) can be a real time thief. It seems to take 4x longer than it should.

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Still plodding along with wires. Got my horns wired and made a mount for them.
Been reading my books so much I've got them half memorized, lol. I'm thinking I have the neutral safety/reverse light switch and the Dakota digital gear indicator to do. Both are on the transmission in the same area, and I have the wires run there, so just hookup to the switch is left to do, and mount the Dakota indicator. after that I have the Vintage air wires and the radio left, at least I think so. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Been working on the neutral safety and reverse lights. Also the Dakota Digital gear indicator. Still have a little to do.
Stuff looks closer to the exhaust than it is, about 2 inches away. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
looking good. gonna be driving soon.
I kmow you have 2 inches between your exhaust pipe and the electrical stuff but it wouldn't take much to fab up an L shaped sheet metal heat guard that could be screwed onto the trans pan bolts to keep from having an issue. you could use studs in place of a couple of the bolts to make life easier. if you found a couple of studs with the nut in the middle you could install them in place of a couple of the original bolts then a flat washer, then the guard, another flat and finally a locknut. the pan bolts are M8-1.25 and 16mm length. here is a link to a stud that is a stock GM number just to what I mean for a stud or flange bolt or whatever they are actually called. lol https://www.ebay.com/itm/332785338193 |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
I've been wondering about some kind of shield for heat. What about exhaust wrap? Say for about 16 inches or so.

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Thinking about using some of this stuff. I have enough left I can even double it up for a 1/2 inch thick layer. 1/4 is supposed to stop 70% of heat radiating, so 2 layers should do it.
I've spent quite a bit of time looking at this heat barrier and I think if I double it, and I have just enough to do that, then wrap the 2 layers 65% of the way around which leaves the opposite side to breathe, it ought to be good. Last edited by washington blue; 03-26-2025 at 11:37 PM. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
That may do the job. It will bring the pipe closer to the trans and electrical though. I always try to think if it from a service standpoint and find a removable heat shield easier to work with than something more permanent. It's your truck though so you gotta do what suits you. The trans switch and wiring probably won't need much service once it's up and running and proven. The shifter itself should also be fine once up and running and having found its happy place after everything bodywise has shifted around and settled. Servicing the trans should be straight forward enough because the pan drops straight down. Personally, I just like space around things that's all.
There is also heat shielding wrap available for items like wiring. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
104 bolts later and poof, instant box. I still have to hang some of the exhaust back and heat shields, raise up the gas tank and tighten some nuts yet.
