Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

No problem. Threaded nipple replaces the plug in the block. That goes to the bottom of the heater. Outlet on the heater goes to a y installed on the line between the intake and heater core. I’ll send a pic of that next along with an update.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Here’s the Y.

Haven’t done much to the truck lately. Camper is getting a full refresh on the electrical side with new batteries and a boondocker power center. Also moving to some new digs. Bad news is trucks probably aren’t getting paint for a bit longer. Good news they will fit in the garage, and the lot has room for a future shop.

I joined the forum about the same time you started on this truck. There has been so much progress and I hope that it is still running well for you. Good luck on the new home.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Hey j-rod happy holidays to you as well! When is the next work trip up here? It never gets cold anymore so you can come whenever. Mostly moved into the new place. Garage is big and good storage but no spot for a work bench. Might just have to build a shop... camper got slept in one night last summer. In the driveway. That’s the way the ball bounces. The move sucked up a bunch of time and we welcomed our second little boy in July so I’ll take that trade.

Hey LT time flies but yes the truck is still doing it’s job well. New transmission has caused no problems and the motor is strong as can be. Hopefully next summer it’ll get some miles and nights in the camper put on it. There might have also been an incident earlier this winter where it had to pull the k30 out of the front yard during a plowing attempt...

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Oh man I missed that auction. Probably a good thing! That truck looked exactly the same as mine. Similar miles, similar trim, dent in the same spot on the right rear corner... I also think I paid $3500 for mine. Truck was the cheapest part of that transaction.

In related news, I think she will be getting paint soon. I need to do something before this surface rust turns serious. All this working from home has had me thinking truck projects. Cant wait to get the camper out. It's 25F and dumping snow today though.

I'll be up your way mid-June if the 'Rona goes away by then. Who are you going to get to do the paint? Hope all's well on your end brother!

Hey J-Rod! I was just wondering to myself if punching holes in the ozone is essential... Local body guy who has a shop at his house, and also works on a bunch of our heavy and light duty equipment for work. He's been busy but finally has a hole in his schedule. We are making it so far. Both me and the wife are still able to work and everybody is healthy, so can't ask for any more. Take care and keep me posted on your travels.

It’s always exciting to get them painted. Are you going with the same color or switching it up a bit?

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Right now the plow truck is getting the back half painted to match the front, but with less dents and rust holes. When it gets out of paint jail the crew cab can go in. Sorry j-rod I couldn't do DOT orange for the K30. Plan for this truck is to go back to original after taking her down to bare metal to get rid of all the early 90's primer issues.

Our work still continues and I needed to get to Seward where our boats were loading and a job in Whittier. Figured the best way to stay out of hotels and off airplanes was to drive the camper. Plus doing my part to help Alaska's economy and burn some petrol. She did the first 600+ miles without a hiccup. pulling down about 9 mpg at 60-70 mph. Then she just turned off...

Died on the side of the Seward highway about 20 miles from Anchorage. I had the truck towed to a buddy's place. I could hear fuel pumps cycling both sides and after it sat a while it would crank back up. That made me think ignition problem. No SES light and no codes. I replaced the coil and ignition control module and took off home from Anchorage but it did the same thing again. A buddy subsequently suggested checking a stuck breather. The way the canister is plumbed I think there is a y that goes to both tanks and a single line to the front of the truck which could make sense. Long story long I grabbed a work truck in ANC that needed to come north and she will be home after a right on the back of a semi later this week. Dang it.

Look at all you are doing to help the economy. Keeping towing companies and parts suppliers going. In all seriousness, I am sorry to hear about your troubles.

Sorry to hear about your break-downs. Hopefully it will be easy/cheap to get fixed.

You look like you could really use one of these on your truck! Been a life saver for me a few times already.

That step is a great idea! I’ve got a front hitch I should just get one that slides into the receiver.

The walk of shame...

Naw…. Machines can be temperamental @ times. You made it a fairly good distance before the hiccup so that counts.

In my opinion if that is a “walk of shame” she is making it look damn good! Great looking truck even with the troubles. You will be back behind the wheel in no time.

Bummer. Just part of the fun of old trucks I guess.

Do you have a fuel pressure test port?

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Yes have a fp gauge from a buddy and there’s a test port. I’ll start there tomorrow. Think I’ll slide the camper back out and make it my DD until I can diagnose what the heck is going on. The plow truck is still in paint jail and I need to haul some trash anyway!

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Fixed a few squawks but no smoking gun on the temperamental truck. Drove a few hundred miles around town and couldn’t duplicate the condition. Little water in the gas maybe?

New challenge underway. This was always the goal so we will see how she does... headed to a lake about 300 miles away for the weekend with our new to us jet boat. Full compliment of family this time so the stakes are high!

The truck looks great and doesn't even look like it is squatting with all that weight in the back. Hope you guys have a great time.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Thanks guys.

Success. Truck ran great. Actually got 8.5 mpg which is totally acceptable. Transmission needs more cooler. Floorboards need more insulation. Muffler needs more muffling. Kids did great wife was happy I was relieved.
