Nothing like turning a $400 set of mirrors into a $40 set by grinding off the IH....
Good luck with the re-re-chrome! I'm waiting sort of patiently to see you get back to the truck! I also think we are long overdue for some pics of the whole truck!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Scott ....I've been working nonstop 12hr shifts so I'm only getting a few minutes here and there to work on it....i put all the front end sheetmetal on ,but then pulled it back off when I found some surface rust in a few spots where I had sanded thru the primer before..gonna sand it down and re-epoxy..
I'm trying to get the bed ready for paint now ...its close...right now working on the rear fender that I did away with the spare tire notch ....this is a hairpuller... trying to blend all those radius curves and trying to make it look right ain't easy for somebody (me), that dont know what they're doing...

Don't cut yourself short - you're a very talented guy and you are doing amazing work! I'm sure you'll figure it out or just machine a brand new one!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Same here. Long work hours, shorter days, and some rainy weekends have brought my garage build to almost a halt. I was hoping to have a completed roof by the end of October. January might be more realistic now.

My standard work schedule is 9 hr + 1 hr lunch and about an hour round trip with the idea that we're done at noon on Fridays. Guess how many fridays I leave at noon, let alone by 3-4PM. I almost wish we'd switch back to 8 hour days, but every-time I get to thinking about that, I get a string of a few weeks where I leave on time...

I'm a little jealous of the wife, she makes more $ than I do and only works 4 days/week. I can't imagine how much I would get done if I had a guaranteed 3 day weekend every week.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Robert...!!..always look forward to your updates...

I know what you mean Jesse..I've got a 40 min to a hr drive each way....my normal schedule is 12hr shifts.... 4 days one week and 3 days the next week....and back and forth....so I usually have either 3 or 4 days off each week...since Jan I've been on nearly constant 12hr/7days....

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

thanks Scott....still got some sanding to do on the nose of the fender...after I got the shiny epoxy on it, there are several flatspots that I couldn't see or feel when I was doing the filler work,,

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Robert ...yeah, the flat spots dont show up in the pic...but they are there...it all felt good and looked good with the filler but when I put the shiny epoxy on it they really stand out...
I've got some soft-sanders ordered..so maybe thatll help get the radius looking right...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

heres the flat spots I referred to before...they were actually caused by a high spot in the filler...got some soft sander pads that allow for a flexible but firm sanding backer... they work very good..
after a little sanding you can easily see what caused the flat spots..

I'm putting this up for people like me that have never done this before
pic 1 is the soft sander pad
pic 2 shows sandpaper layed over the radius.sticky side up
pic 3&4 shows the soft sander stuck to the sandpaper and how it holds the radius
pic 5 shows the high spot in the filler that in turn was making the flat spots I could see

I was kinda holding off on really sanding the rear fender until I got some guide coat...I've been using a light mist of paint but have been wanting to try the powder type....if you want to know how bad your finish work is try the powder...it shows every defect....for those of us learning I'd recommend this to anyone to get some of this...heres the brand I got...

Let us know how it works. I've always used spray bombs (which tend to clog paper fast).
