Re: My long term 57 project

Thanks Dan, sorry to keep you waiting!!

I had a new set of main frame rails bent up using 3/16 mild steel to match the PB parts.

The first set I bought were made from 10 gauge, matching the original frame thickness.

My Dad spent a Saturday with me and we got most of it bolted together. It turns out by using the 3/16 steel, the inner rail dimension is shorter, so I had to have 4 pieces made to use bolting the frame stiffener in place.

It's been very hot here, but trying to do a little each day. Have been side tracked helping a buddy put a Vintage Air setup in his 69 Camaro!

Re: My long term 57 project

Thanks everyone, I hope the progress picks up soon!

At this point I'm thinking powder coat for the frame.

Re: My long term 57 project

JJ,
My guy strongly suggested a satin or semi gloss black on the frame when I originally planned to do gloss. My frame is nowhere near as nice as yours but he claimed the slightest rub on the gloss leaves marks. I went with satin and it looks fine.

That said, I did the seat frames in gloss just to see how they'd look - AWESOM!. Since you're doing this all yourself and no one will be there to mess up your finish you might want to consider gloss. Not a critical decision I guess but it DOES look so good.

Re: My long term 57 project

Thanks for the input Dan, I truly appreciate it!

I'm thinking of a combination of satin and gloss right now. Maybe some "Hammer Tone" on the inner frame stiffener??

Re: My long term 57 project

Somewhere (?) I saw a car with a hammertone powder coat that was black but the hammered finsih showed some silver. Sound bad but looked GREAT. No idea what that's called.

Re: My long term 57 project

Got 4 small C channel pieces bent up and drilled to mount the center frame stiffener and a piece to tie the frame ends together. Lots of humidity on the coast in SC, so the parts have started to surface rust!

Didn't like the way the mounting ears of the CPP tank were looking so decided to change them up a bit. Drew out some curves and went at it with a hack saw! Turned out like I hoped. Thinking I'll have the lower half of the tank and the back covered in bed liner to protect it.

Hope to make more progress when the kids go back to school in 2 weeks!

Also excited for the full eclipse to pass overhead on the 21st!!

Re: My long term 57 project

Stylish JJ! With this frame, suspension and all the little embellishments like the gas tank flange you should hinge the bed and put it on a hydraulic ram. Everyone needs to SEE this beautiful work!

Re: My long term 57 project

Thanks Guys!

Plan is to move current body over to new frame, but I'm always on the look out for a second body!

Yea Dan, I've thinking of building the bed to open up to show frame work underneath!

It's going to be super cool already. If you do the bed thing it's REALLY be over the top. Jimmy, Cameo, full custom suspension, LS. Can't wait to see the finished result!
