Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Nothing on the truck per se, but I'm enlarging my garage so I wil be ABLE to work on my truck easier. Does that count?

After FINALLY welding these beams in place over the weekend, I painted them today with Rustoleum Hammered silver. Rolled with $2 throw away foam roller.

Looking good. I painted the inside of the bumpers on my last truck with that same paint. I've never been disappointed with Rustoleum paint.

No schit, huh?!

I was quoted $240 for just ONE 4" deep I beam, 8 ft long. I found these beams 10" deep, 4" flanges, 25 ft long in Craigslist for only $100!! Had to drop $40 for a used cheapo Harbor Freight portaband to cut them in half - even at 12+ ft they were a stretch to get home on my dually!

Had to go into the war zone inner city to get them too but it was quite a savings.

Some poor contractor is trying to figure out where his steel for his project went! I did the same with my garage with the laminated beams. Got mis-cut one 6" deeper and 2" wider than what I needed for 25% of new cost.

Funny, that's the same thing I first thought when I saw the steel on CL. Turned out to be about a 75 ft by 500 ft deep lot in Gardena with just an indescrible amount of CRAP in it. Literally abandoned boats, shelves, semi trailers, 2-3 uninhabitable houses and get this: There was a Plymouth Superbird (OMG!!!) at the very back of that lot! It was stripped to bare steel, rusting away and the nose was damaged and sitting to one side but the wing was there. Of course he didn't want to sell it He's "gonna fix it up one day" - RIIGHT.

This steel was inside one of those ancient semi truck trailers. Had a biyatch of a time getting it out of there cause it was 25 ft long at the time.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Discovered that the previous owner slapped about a pound of JB weld on both sides of the block and painted it orange to hide some pretty serious cracks. On the up side I found a 4-bolt main block at an auto salvage yard pretty cheap. It seems I fix one thing and find two more problems to fix, and loving every minute of it.

That's how I USED to live!

I'm unmarried but my girlfriend and I (no, Cali is NOT a "common law" state) have a "house account" and its for ALL house bills, groceries, utilities, things like this garage retrofit, etc. All other monies we make are mine or hers to spend as we see fit. I dont give a damn how many shoes she buys (a lot) and she doesn't care how many tools I buy. Tools I need for a "house" project I pay for alone cause tools are mine forever, period. Its a great way to live guys!!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

PS: I lifted that big mutha 14'-4" beam in place by myself. And I'm 57. No, I'm not a former Olympic power lifter, lol. I lifted on end onto an 8 ft ladder, then the other end onto a 6ft ladder. After hitching up my balls(OMG it was heavy) I used a heavy ratchet strap to get it within the last 6" but then the strap itself was in the way. I was on top of that 6 ft ladder with the beam resting on my thigh. One max effort "curl" got it on the column.

Needless to say, I have a dull mind and a (used to be) strong back. I do NOT recommend anyone else ever try this!!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Russell, using that paint inside the bumpers hadn't occurred to me, good idea. I saw someone on here (?) used undercoating. I planned on using Gibbs oil, but maybe this paint is a better idea. Do you have any pictures? Did you just paint it on directly or use some kind of primer?

I use Rustoleum paint, then paintable undercoating (rattlecan from the auto paint store) and will paint with finish color and clear. Did the same on the inside of the fenders and bed sides.

Apparently I didn't take any pics of it. I had just gotten my bumpers back from the chrome shop so I just wiped the inside down with thinner and brushed the paint on.

Can you tell me more about your "carport" paintjob? What kind of paint, color? And what size wheels do you have there and tires-make and size?
Thanks!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Actually it was a few days ago, but I got my truck inspected - good for another year!! I'll bet when those guys on the assembly line put in the windshield, they never dreamed it would one day have a '2013' sticker on it! I'm driving it to work tomorrow to pick up a shelving unit they're throwing out.

Ain't that so cool to think about!?! People didn't buy trucks for pleasure back in the day - they were for work. Easy to imagine them pulling stumps, hauling wood, etc. Makes you feel good to know that your preserving something that has such a long 'storied' history - even if most of it is unknown to us.

I used Blitz Black (many pros and cons depending on the search you do and the forum you search on). A $9 Harbor Freight gun and a rather small compressor. This is a father and 13 year old son build so we are doing everything ourselves with what we have, which is making some really good times. The wheels are Wheel vintiques Chrome Smoothies 15x8's, and Coker 235/75/15's. The tires were close to the most expensive single item purchased so far other than the truck itself. We did find out that the engine block had cracks on both sides and was "repaired" using JB Weld by someone. We have since located another block and are gathering parts as we speak for an overhaul. Did I say good-times...The goal is to drive it to the Redneck Rumble in September. Lots to do!!!
