1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

It’s that time of year where we are scrambling around here to finish work projects, finish home projects, finish truck projects because the white stuff is coming. Grabbed a mini ex and helped my father in law do some rock work around his place. They live up in the hills so getting a loaded equipment trailer then a loaded dump trailer up there wasn’t boring.

I had to put the hubs in to get the load of gravel up the driveway and figured what the heck I’ll put it in low to make it easier on the truck. No go. Power to the front axle only. Tcase works as advertised besides this one issue. Do I have a shift rod out of adjustment or something more sinister? I dug a hell of a home in their driveway with my front left tire...

And we did not beat the snow...

Great truck Marcus, what brand/application are your side steps for? I've been searching for some for mine. I apologize in advance if you already if you already posted this. I'm only to your 454 rebuild section, saw you were online and thought I'd ask.

Appreciate it. No worries at all. N-Fab makes the steps. They say for a 2500HD but I forgive them since they actually make some steps for our trucks. Also are available for short and long bed regular cabs and sunurbans I think.

Thats a weird issue to have there Marcus. Im fairly certain that my 205 has no adjustment on the shift shafts and unless you are twin sticked, the equalizing bar that is between the two shafts makes it near impossible to get the front axle without the rear. May be part of the equalizer bar (don't know the name for it) missing?

I know that the shafts for a twin stick usually have some of the detents machined or ground out.

Front axle only is a strange one for sure. I would like to hear what you find.

The truck looks awesome as usual and its great to see her putting in the work as intended!

Thanks Chris. I’ll keep you posted on the tcase. Honestly it’s pretty far down on the priority list right now. The one car (wife’s) garage is full of truck parts, plow truck has no fuel tanks, crew cab has no topper, camper has no cover and it’s dipping below zero already!

Speaking of cold, here’s a reminder of why I prefer gas: gelled fuel happens to someone I know almost every year.

Kind of a fun mission since this same 9,000 lbs super duty died a few years ago when I had the tired tbi 350, and smaller tires, and I could not get it up the 12% grade on packed snow to the top where it lives.

Challenge accepted. Heavy throttle at first with lots of pedaling when the tires started spinning and we made it. Should have had the go-pro going it was loud and fast and impressive.

Had that same thing happen in CO one year with a 7.3 CC I had. NOT FUN!

I know that you've hit a new benchmark when you can pull anything on a snow covered road thats upside down . I get what you mean! Now to unscramble my eyes and brain .

Does your truck have any kind of lockers? I'm worried about my truck behaving in the snow with the detroit in the back.

Nice you're getting more work out of it! Yeah, you have to be pro active when owning a diesel for sure. Luckily we haven't stayed cold here yet. Did you have any time to look into your tcase issue yet? The siping definitely makes a big difference in the snow for sure. We switched over to tires with siping on our fleet at work since they all have the traction control you can't disable. Best thing we've done yet.

Open diffs front and rear. Needs something. I’d like a pair of true-tracs. Maybe I’ll try one out on the plow truck...

Haven’t diagnosed the tcase yet. 4hi works fine so I’m rolling with it for now. We run the same tires siped on all our work trucks and they aren’t half bad in the snow. Way better than not siped!

Yeah I picked up a complete swap from a 98 with 180k on it for a song, just either have to convert the 2wd 4l80 to 4wd or find another. i already picked up a np208 and adapter/mount from a 3/4 with th400/208

Hey Kacy, I still owe you cam specs.

I finally got tired of taking my crappy radiator in and out to have the shop fix the latest leak it sprung. So I went to Napa and got a part number NR 2071 Napa brand radiator coming. No more spectra Chinese radiator! They only wanted $50 for freight and the price was right.

Imagine my surprise when I picked it up today and it was a spectra CU774. Same freaking part number. This one is made in Japan though and survived the trip over the pond much better with no dings. So I thought Larry had one from Canada, and now I have China and Japan covered.
