Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
Installed my outside locking door handle and put an arm rest on while I had the door panel off. I used an old door panel I had as a template to mark the holes.

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
Well I have been driving my truck with little to no problems..... So I decided to change the rear end "grease" before I headed over to Arkansas to Clemdaddy's for the food and fun.
I never expected to find this! So far the gears look ok, but the bearings not so much. I will clean up everything in the VAT tomorrow and see how bad it is

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
I've seen some nasty gear oil before, but that is all kinds of nasty. Must have got water in there at some point. Was the truck under water?

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
wow sig... first time i've seen rear end pudding. did it smell like chocolate?
x2 on the moisture. was it making noise? looks like seals and bearings may be in your future or it might be easier to just swap it out... |

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
It did get water in it at some point obviously.... not sure when, it was never under water in a flood or anything. It did sit parked outside with no wood in the bed for about 20 years with the rain and snow coming down on the top of the rear end. I also pressure washed the h$!! out of the frame and suspension with the body removed.
I put 3:40 gears, all new bearings and seals in it about 20 or 25 years ago.... So it had new oil then, but like I said it had a hard 20 years of sitting. It actually had a small amount of moisture ( condesation ) in the engine when I started back to work on it. There was a small hole rusted thru the oil pan, but when I pulled the engine and tore it down evrything looked great so I just changed the pan and used new gaskets. ( look earlier in this thread and you can see the top of the head with no valve cover, that is how it looked inside with no work done to it ). So it got water in it but not sure how much or exactly when, The ring and pinion have a few rust pits but not hardly much at all.... My guess is condensation

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
Not just water, that looks like dust in there too, is your breather tube gone, or was it dangling?

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
It has been awhile since I have posted on the truck.... mostly have just been driving it around town, I still havent put the new bearings in the rear diff. They are slightly pitted so I don't want to go long trips but feel ok just around town. I took my father in law in the Veterans Parade in November ( 30 years in the US Army ).
Here are some pics

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
Here is a one from a local car show..... VFW's first of hopefully many
Tahlequah area has quite a few car shows each year, probably at least 6 in and around city limits 12 or more if you count nearby towns. Gotta love it

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
Ok, it has been awhile since i posted any updates.... so I will try and keep things in time order
I spent most of the past several months busy on the new job, missed most of the car shows and very little done to my truck. I did get to drive it quite abit, but didn't have time to get much work done. I took the truck to the annual Stilwell strawberry festival car show in May. My Grandpa lived there, was Sheriff there, and bought this truck new there. I hadn't been back there in about 20 years. Alot of people recognized the truck right away and were blown away when they saw the bumper stickers and other sheriff memorabila in the display case sitting on the roof. The Sheriff's Department was doing security for the festival and the younger guys got on their cell phones and started calling all the older deputies to come down and see. I saw my Grandpas Under Sheriff from back in the 1950's and 60's. My Grandpa's nephew saw the truck and came over and talked for hours. I took his picture with the truck and emailed it to him. I started to simply replaced my turn signal switch, the old one was cracked and the bearing was loose and you had to hold up on the turn signal lever to keep it blinking. Once I started I decided I must paint the column and steering wheel. Next came painting the inside of the doors where sweat from arms hanging out the window started to rust, then to the dash and instrument cluster, to gutting the doors and new weatherstripping. Next came pulling the seat and floormat, changing the high hump to low hump, and starting to work on changing the inner panel to big back window. I wont get to drive it in the christmas parade or toy run this year, but watch out for next spring at the car shows.... it is starting to shine

Re: Sigshooter's 1965 C10
more pics
I also started replacing the wood in my bed, I went to the local lumber yard and bought 1x's and cut and grooved them myself. I have done jusst the two outer boards on each side so far, but that is the hard ones that have to be cut to length and notched for the wheel well. It already has stopped nearly every squeak and rattle and the bed sits level and straight. I will take some more pics tomorrow and post them
