Double E did a test fit of the new custom electrical harness that he has been spending untold hours designing and fabricating. Simply outstanding work.

Cab Insulation and Noise Control

Well I spent Saturday and Sunday afternoon, finishing up the cab insulation project. First I put down a Dynamat type product, then came the aluminum backed closed cell insulation, then the MLV...Mass Load Vinyl. The MLV is heavy and doesn't like to bend where you need it. The carpet will go in hopefully next weekend.

Ran out of Dynamat so the doors will have to wait. Looks pretty clean, I think.

What purpose does the MLV accomplish besides not laying down very well? I never seen the stuff used here before so wondering if its insulation or sound property's?? Thanks!

Diceman, can you respond to this comment from "Airstream" from a TPI post I'm monitoring?

My surge tank was created by diceman50, I'm sure he'll respond. The tank was actually created by utilizing two DOT calibration gas cylinders which were originally rated at 500psi. As far as the domed ends, I'll default to your brother. On second thought I'll copy and paste your comment, just monitor it for his reply.

What I'm trying to accomplish is keep the heat out, the cool in, and reduce the amount of noise that enters the cab. The jury is still out as to how well this will work. I still haven't done anything with the doors and will need to do that after we get the truck back on it's feet.

Ok thanks for the product link, The link to the article you posted was the same as the product link so i couldn't read the article..

So i'm guessing this stuff may be better than just using 2 layers Dynomat first then the closed cell? Or possibly the way you layer it makes a difference? I'll be interested to read your thoughts on how well it performs, my truck is LOUD...

I was also wondering if you had a heat gun if it would help shape the MLV a little?

Then i had one thought, how thick are the 3 layers and will it affect the accelerator pedal movement enough to be a problem? Just thinking ahead.

Diceman here,

The gas sample canisters we used are rated at 500 PSI and although they are flat bottom on the outside they have a very large radius on the inside which in effect makes them domed on the inside. However, the point is mute since in our application there is ZERO pressure on the surge tank. We are using the mechanical pump on the engine to fill the surge tank with a return line to the main tank. The high pressure pump is inside the surge tank. It pumps fuel to the fuel rails after which excess fuel is returned to the pressure regulator which is mounted on the outside of the tank. Therefore no pressure is introduced to the tank. The pressure testing I did was for the fittings.

The three layers actually do different things. The dynamat reduces harmonic vibrations which can create sound. From what I've studied it is not necessary to completely cover a surface with the material, but somewhere between 25% to 50% coverage will get it done. The aluminized foam serves two purposes, stop heat transfer and stop noise. The mass load vinyl, also stops what I would call airborne noise such as exhaust, tire noise etc.

As for thickness, all 3 layers are less than 1/2 inch, probably closer to 3/8. If I find it's to thick around the gas pedal, I'll just cut it out.

I did try a heat gun, but the MLV didn't seem to want to hold it's shape when it cooled. The good news, is that if you trim it in smaller pieces, it stays put.
My mistake at first was trying to use two large pieces to cover the floor and firewall.

First Engine Test Fit

Had some fun today. The decision was made to test fit the engine and trans.

We found that the 700r4 trans and factory crossmember will match up to existing holes in the frame with out any need to drill holes. The engine stands were sorted out and bolted to existing holes, with the exception of the bottom stand holes, which we'll drill when we pull the engine back out. No interference between the firewall and distributor and the distributor will drop in. Looks like the drive shaft will need to be shortened about 3 inches. No clearance problems with the Sanderson CC11 headers.

All in all a very good day. So, here's a few pics. You'll notice the engine still has the stock ZZ4 carb manifold. The TPI set up will go on later.

Just a little Jewelry

Got a few things done this afternoon. Car Boss is working on the fuel lines for the FIRST TPI, we got the trans cross member bolted down, and we had a little fun adding some "Jewelry" to the fender, a little preview of things to come.
