Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

NCD, I just noticed your hometown....I'm originally from Sulphur. This is where my Uncle who sold me my truck lives; that's where we picked it up from and towed it back to Mobile. I have a cousin living in Lafayette, and an Aunt in Jennings. Small world!

Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

Well, I did a good bit today. I bought some of that clear window protector stuff, it works awesome. I replaced the 1/8" plexi with 1/4", and cut some slots in the side (bottom) of the barrel. The slots kept the vacuum from working so hard, and the thicker plexi kept the window from flexing. This thing rocks! The new plexi is clear as a bell, and coupled with the clear shield I have no issues with view anymore.

I also bought a bucket, and a small plastic window frame from Lowes. The window frame is a plastic rectangle with a screen; basically a small screen window insert. I vacuum the sand out of the blaster, pour that out into a bucket, then pour that bucket into another bucket with this screen on top of it. It acts as a sand filter, taking all the old paint and rust particles that are bigger than the sand out of the bucket. Works awesome! This will keep my sand buying to a minimum.

I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow; I was too busy blasting parts today to take any.

Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

Well, looks like I am on hold for a few days; I went to clean the gun and ended up breaking the ceramic nozzle. Turns out that the blast kit HF sells comes with a different nozzle than they sell replacements for (at least in my local store). I looked on HF online, but they're on backorder. I did, however, find them at NorthernTool.com. Hope to have them in this week....

Still waiting on my cab to get blasted. It's been 3 months now.......ugh.

Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

Blast nozzles came in, back in business!

While working on a cowl corner piece, I found these surprises:

Yay.

Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

Yeah. I have an old hood that has pretty good solid metal on the sides so I think I'll try some surgery before starting to shop for newer ones. Been itching to weld something....

As far as progress goes, I was able to get the undercoating scraped off the steps last night, and expose the rusted-through areas. It looks like the steps are in relatively good shape. Sofar it looks like the only small miscellaneous body parts that really need major attention are the cowl corners. There are some tears and rips on the steps, and a few holes, but for the most part everything looks to be in good shape.

Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

Man, when it rains it pours......I found a deal on Craigslist, a guy had a like-new engine hoist and stand for $300. I got him down to $200, and hooked up the trailer and made the 45 minute trip to meet him. The stand and hoist are in excellent shape, he only used them once. Well, on the way back, my fuel pump on the S-10 went south....$270 bucks for the replacement. Good thing I bought the hoist, because it was immediately put to work lifting the bed off the truck for the fuel pump replacement. Took me about 3 hours to get that done.....

Other than that, I haven't done much to the truck. I was beat by the time I got the fuel pump in.....

Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

I was actually able to get a bit done on the steps. Last weekend I scraped the undercoat off with a scraper and a torch. Then I wire-wheeled the areas of rust-through. They are in a lot better shape than I thought, which is opposite of the norm. I had to cut the step brace bolts off with a cutoff wheel.

Close-up shot of the bad area. This isn't bad at all.........

Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

almost 5 months......I talked to him yesterday. My truck is next on the list, according to him. 'Next Monday or Tuesday give me a call', he says. I've heard that before. We'll see.

Other than that - I primed my first part today with my new HVLP gun!

And the helpers wanted to help with the picture.......can you guess what their favorite team is?

if you need a set of cowl corners I have 2 extra sets. if you pay the shipping they are yours, they are all rust free and pretty good shape, then yu could spend your time fixing other parts of your truck

Re: Bkndsdls' 64 Build - 9+ years strong

Here's some stuff I knew was bad rusted..........

..........And some stuff I didn't. I am very happy the cab's finally blasted and primed and back home, but I'm also dissapointed in the amount of rust that was found.

Man I think your cab is worse then mine, I hate to blast mine. But like everyone says it's only metal, And if you suck at welding, you'll be better when your done.

Well... You do have a project ahead .... pick an easy fix and start in. by the time the hard spots come around you will be ready for them. Having things blasted and clean sure shows the problem areas.

Inspecting welds and being a good welder are 2 diffrent things. I'm about to go to school for welding and my buddy just finished up there. He said the instructer is a weld inspector but sucks at welding.

I was welding long before I was an inspector....and I'll be real honest with ya, I'd be kinda leary of going to a school to learn welding when they let someone who sucks at welding teach it......
