All engine wiring done. Plugging up fuel harness and a few other odds and ends. Should hear it run this week. Then on to brakes if no issues. Obsolete,Obsolete, obsolete....should be a fun journey. HO72 and 73 C30 front.

The computer is due back this week. We went ahead and took this time to dig into the brakes. All parts ordered. Time for some stopping power!

Re: Rottenwood Garages C50 Hauler project about to begin!
It’s not done yet but it’s together, running, driving and stopping. 1969 Chevrolet C50 sitting on a 1970 GMC C30 chassis with 1972 Chevrolet suspension powered by a 1999 Chevrolet Vortec with 1998 wiring, computer and transmission. We might name it Bonneville?!?

Re: Rottenwood Garages C50 Hauler project about to begin!
My question why not just update the chassis to a 1990 frame engine rear end power steering and hydro boosted brakes. When i build my 1964-66 3 ton bob tail 16 foot bed but 20 foot truck I rather have updated stuff that is still be used.
I have a saying i rather have new under my truck instead of running old that i can't find or or neglected and hit a school bus full of kids. No i want disc brakes all the way around to be able to stop that mother.Plus what is wrong with updating a old truck.I love to have air ride.I've seen the new racketpion for the new chevy truck its ok But i rather have that angled big box with the new I beam.Seen a few of the new 5500 chevy trucks running the New A arm suspion Thats a trip. But i hear they like to tear up tires.Plus i want nothing to do with 19.5 if i'm running a tire i was the 22.5 more common tire. But nice truck |

Re: Rottenwood Garages C50 Hauler project about to begin!
One question if you had to do your shop building again what would you done different .Maybe a bigger metal building Maybe even puttin in one of them heavy duty rail crain's that sit above your shop to lift beds off with out having a heavy crane to do it Would you add a second floor for parts storage.Armstrong makes them big ceiling heaters put 3 of them in your shop with 2 down drafts during the summer months.
If you had over 50K to 90K to invest in a building what would you have done different to make working on these old type of trucks.Maybe a 15Ton 4 post truck lift. I'm just picking your brain.Cus I'm moving out of Calif and moving back in the rust belt and i like to know the ins and outs of what you would of done different to your shop. Been in the scrap and salvage for over 25 years.Works for Air craft builders Big tractor places even a place that work on Military bases and updated everything. I try to re purpose most of the stuff i come a across.I just got done cleaning out my 3 tons of brass and copper pipe and fittings. AN fittings from Air craft.I found a calling in sorting nuts and bolts metric to standard to coarse to fine thread. I found out some of these Metal card file metal cabinets make wonder full places to store my bolts washers Brass fittings copper fittings. The list goes on and on.My 4000 sq foot shop now is a work of art.If i'm working on something it take me a matter of 5 mins to fix what ever i'm working on.Lost metric nuts there the ***** to find in a bucket takes me 2 mins i'm back to work. I have a shop that payed me 3000.00 to reset his shop up plus he had to buy the the cabinets that i needed for it to work then it made his shop run smooth..I call it no wasted time looking for anything. In and out. Sorry for the long note just wanted to know what you would of done different in your shop if you had the money |

Re: Rottenwood Garages C50 Hauler project about to begin!
Quote:
Bed and Frame This particular build was centered around the bed and the frame it was attached to. I/we do NOT get into LONG drawn out, time consuming expensive builds. The bed set perfectly, looked great and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the frame its welded on and certainly nothing wrong with using it. We build these vehicles in stages. We DO NOT drag builds out longer than 6 months. Consequently what you see, we consider PHASE 1. It can and will be updated as the need arises. Cutting the bed off and re fabricating it on a different width frame is just not of any interest to me. I would be better off building the bed from scratch and that's not really of interest. Rear axle. Will be replaced when it goes out or I find one. Absolutely NO reason not to use it. HUGE brakes and works perfectly. Front suspension We wanted to see how the ride height was. It will likely get 73-87 drop spindles and the brakes are already from those years. Not alot of difference in 87 and 90. Brakes There is nothing "UNSAFE" about the brake system on this truck. Disc/drum/master/booster have been used for a lot longer than I have been on this planet safely. All components are new except the rear drums. Nothing under the truck is "neglected", but yes. there is one brake part that is obsolete. Hydroboost...great idea and yes, and option...as mentioned....rolling project phase 1. A great upgrade...yes... Is it necessary??? Absolutely not. 4 wheel disc....when rear axle goes...certainly something to look at...necessary....NOPE.. rear brakes work great I've owned medium duty trucks all my life and have never had rear discs. They all stop well! There is nothing wrong with a disc drum master/booster brake system with the correct size calipers, rotors and drums that are correctly adjusted and maintained. Would newer stuff be nice, yes!! Necessary....absolutely not. Lets also remember 1990 is not really new either. So, could there be different ways to do it...yes! MANY. Are there better braking options available...YES....Is there anything wrong with the system underneath the truck....NO. Would using a hydroboost system from 1990 keep me from rear ending a school bus full of children as apposed to what is currently under my truck....Im thinking probably not?? Im glad you are happy and feel secure with your build and the way you did it. I would not be able to sleep at night if I was worried about rear ending a school buss full of children either. I too am happy and very comfortable with what I have rolled out for Phase 1. ..

Re: Rottenwood Garages C50 Hauler project about to begin!
Light duty this weekend on the wedge. Didn't spend a lot of time worrying about school buses but we did work on the interior. Had the local police come out for a VIN verification, installed new dash pad, re-purposed a rubber mat from another truck, worked on the gauge cluster and got most of the exterior lighting working. i also did a little insurance searching. WOW the rates have gone up!! Unfortunately I cant use Hagertys if I want to haul with it?!?! Should be o the road soon!

Today is the day. It has insurance on it as of this morning. I got the sound deader in it, rubber mat and seat yesterday. This morning i will trouble shoot the brake lights and then its off on its first run outside the neighborhood!
