How did you get the paint off your rims and tires? Not trying to bash or anything, but if I ever spray at home I would want to know a mistake I would probably make?

I might be wrong but that pic looks as if he's in the color sanding stage in which case its probably just paint dust on the wheels? im not sure i know anyone that would spend the kind of money those rims cost then not take AMPLE amounts of time to tape them off before paint... either way extrodinary paint job and i really like his build!

Re: single stage paint pics

I believe this is PPG Omni. Sprayed it myself in my workshop with a $25 spray gun. For my first try at paint & body I'm very pleased with my results.

Re: single stage paint pics

My '69 has single polyurethane enamel, and was painted about 17 years ago. The pics are recent, and it still realkly shines, but this bad boy was beautiful when the PO had it painted originally. I can't believe he didn't keep in out of the weather after the restoration.

Andrew is right, that is after cut and buff. The mess on the floor and on my wheels is from wet sanding and buffing. I had the wheels off when I painted the cab. Thanks for the nice comments. It was my first paint job and I really wanted it to be something I could show off. Especially show it to all my skeptic friends that thought I needed to find a good body shop, ha!

This shot is before buffing, its got a few bugs and some peel that I had to sand out;

Re: single stage paint pics

DuPont single stage Centuri (sp?) for the green metallic. The white (bumper and cab roof) are PPG Omni MAE also a single stage paint. Both are painted over the PPG Omni epoxy primer that was sprayed on over bare metal.

I only got as far back as the doors. When the bed and last 3 inches of cab are done I'll post pictures other than of just the front of the truck.

The green sure is. I took the paint code to my DuPont jobber and had him mix it up. The sheet metal (when I started, some has been replaced) was from a 1970. The paint code is something like "medium green poly". The poly being what we would call today metal flake. Inside the green cab, it is tough to tell the difference from what is original and what came out of my DuPont can.

The white is NOT the original white. The original white I think is a tad more ivory or off white than what I have.

I hate to sound like a total newb here, but can you explain what you mean by single stage. What are the other options? I know nothing about paint.

Re: single stage paint pics

Single stage is just that. It's kind of like spray paint, but with a real paint gun. You spray it all in one shot and you're done. You mix the paint, hardener, and reducer all at once, spray, and that's it. You can do as many coats as you like.

Two stage is your base/clear option. You spray on your paint color, (base coat) and once that flashes you can spray on your clear coats. This is how new cars are painted.

Re: single stage paint pics

You beat me to it 67ChevyRedneck..

Here's a '72 that I painted several years ago with single stage. This was after I cut and buffed it.

And for comparison, here's a base coat/clear coat I did on another one I "should have kept".

You are correct, you should have kept it. I sold mine when I was young and broke. I think they will increase in value for another 10 to 20 years so it's getting harder to get back into one. Nice truck too btw.
