Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

hey bud.....noticed you trimmed out the passenger side front of the frame, for the air conditioning compressor I would guess, and was wondering if you had figured the strength reduction if any? the reason I am asking is because I wanted to try the same with mine. Just wasn't sure if it would be enough support? Thanks

Nice build once again!

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

lol THANKS guys!
DBear - Yep i trimmed out the frame for the a/c compressor, i didn't want to mount it on top of the motor, but rather keep it hidden for a cleaner look. I then welded in a 3/8" plate of steel.

Thanks you guys, i've never built anything like this before but i'm pretty happy with how it's going. I'm hoping to get it done before my wedding next August so we can get some pics with it..

I probably could if i had time, but I barely have time to work on my own project.. My hot pipe came with Industrial Injection's turbo kit, I would call them and see if they would sell it to you

How much HP do you think that motor will be pushing? Over on the Cummins forums all those guys can talk about is finding a tranny that won't blow round about 500 horses.

It should dyno close to 850 with timing and injection maxed out. My engine builder recommended the nv4500 with a billet input shaft. He ran one on his pulling truck for years without any problems, but the np205 transfer case i'm worried about. I'm using a rebuilt unit bored larger for extreme duty bearings, i'm told the gears like to walk up on each other. I picked up a spare if i need it. The other weak link is my 14 bolt rear, it may last a little while but definitely not forever. I talked to a local shop who can bore the tubes and housing to fit larger gears and billet shafts. I probably could've spent more time researching a stronger set-up but i'm too impatient

They came with the motor so I guess they're used on all AG use engines.

The seats have a nice comfortable shape but the leather got dry and hard. I'm hoping the KR leather conditioner will soften them. I picked mine up off ebay, i have $750 in em.

Here's a straighter side shot. I'll post close up pics after it's all painted here at the end of the month.

Subin up for another sweet build. How comfortable are the KR seats? Seen a few sets around here for sale but want major $$$$ for them.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

I just finished mounting the doors and new style chevy tow mirrors. They were a lot of work and look slightly awkward how they're mounted but totally worth it in my opinion. I made an exact replica of the window with stainless steel and bolted the mirrors to em. The mirrors moved too much so I then had to weld a heavier plate on the inside of the door. Should work great, look decent, and they will be wired up to the factory power mirror harness.

I know some of you won't like the mirrors or how i mounted them but please don't rain on my parade...

Here's some pics, thanks guys!

Great idea, I always wondered how they would work. How about some closeups of the mounting and a straight side shot of them?

I like the mirrors. I was going to do the same thing. If you end up blowing up the 14 bolt you could step up to a dana 80, or get an AAM 1150. The AAM is the "new" version of the 14 bolt and is just as strong as the dana 80. Its what is being used in all the new chevy and dodge trucks.

1150 is a great idea thanks, I better start lookin for one now and have it ready to go in when this 14 bolt lays down.

Blind spot, in my opinion, isn't bad at all and won't bother me anyway. It's no worse then the roll cage but whatever it's the best i could do with the tools i have and i'm in a hurry to get this thing done!

I couldn't stand how the mirrors didn't blend in so i made a bunch of changes and got them to fit much better! Keep in mind the mirror and window plate will both be painted.

I also threw together a rolling frame so the painter can roll the cab around his shop, plus it wouldn't fit inside the paint booth if it was on the chassis.
