This thread should really be a sticky in the 60-66 forums or a FAQ article.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
here's what I deciphered from www.6066gmc.org/ :
10=1/2 ton 02=127" wheelbase P= pontiac michigan assembly plant F= 64-66 model year* see the pharagraph below for more on the F code. 6261= sequential production # A=6000 pounds or less GVW *The series letter for 1964 to 1966 is "F". There was not any more major changes for this body style. But there was a series letter "E" used on some 1965 trucks (have not seen any yet) & "D" used on all inline engined 1966 trucks. More info has been found for "F" Series Trucks, GMC built truck in two plants from 1964 to 1966, the Pontiac Michigan plant & one of two plants in California, Oakland or Fremont. If your trucks vin shows "HF" it was built in the Oakland California plant which GMC shut down after the 1964 Model year, so all "HF" trucks are 1964. Production was moved to an ALL NEW plant built in Fremont California for 1965, so "ZF" trucks are 1965 or 1966. So here is a brake down of the series letters; N = 1960-1961, J = 1962, G = 1963, F =1964-1966, E = 1965, D = 1966 |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
The next group of numbers is the Serial number or unit built number, all series at all plants
started with Serial number 1001. For the 1966 year run, GMC started most series with Serial number 10,001, but some series not used in 1965 started with 1001. I have found that GMC had a lot of left over trucks from 1965 & they sold them NEW in 1966 as 1966 Models, this was done to rid the dealers of any older trucks still on the lot to make way for the NEW body Style coming in 1967. If you have a GMC "PF" or "ZF" series truck titled as a 1966, but the Serial number is lower then 10,000, it mite really be a 1965 model year truck. One way to tell is to check the engine for a spin-on oil filter, no spin-on filter, then it's a 1965. GMC swithed to the spin-on oil filter for the 1966 model year on V6 powered trucks. with that in mind...yours should be the 1171st built that year.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
so if the production was 1071th then what was the purpose for 11071th being stamped to the vin plate kinda wired to think about.

Jon
Here is my vin # 4C144 H 103757 Can you help me break this down? I understand it's a 64 short wheelbase. But that's about it. Can you tell where it was made what motor and trans and rear end gear ratio? Thanks! Tony from Norcal Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
So, I tried to get a title for my truck and part of that process is taking the vehicle to the sherriff office vehicle theft unit and they give you a forum so you can complete the process.
They weren't accepting the door frame plate with the serial number and wanted the vin from the chassis, which they believe to be on the drivers side on the top of the frame rail, just in front of the rear cab mount. So, since I might be replacing the cab anyways, I cut open the floor to expose that part of the frame and there was nothing there. There was nothing that I could see on the front part of the frame (horns? area). From what I've read, Chevys may have had these stampings on the frame, but the GMC's didn't, especially my year of truck, 1960. Thanks for any tips. Any thoughts on this? |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
There is no VIN on a GMC frame..
That's a fact that many argue with. It's not a chevy. Gmc is a different comany in the 60s. So chevy info does not apply to your gmc. Quote:

On my 63, it's on the A pillar at the front of the door jam.
On my 66, at the top.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
tony I was not able to get the vin decoder link to work, but my 64 owners manual helped:
4= 1964 c= conventional cab 14= 1/2 ton 4=cab & pickup box H=fremont (calif assembly plant) 103757= #3757 produced that year there is no way to tell the motor and trans and rear end data off the vin tag. the rear axle tube pass side near the diff should have a code stamped in it, however I don't have a break down of the codes... the owners manual shows a standard rear ratio of 3.73 for all c 10's, with 4.11, and 3.07's being optional you have a low hump cab, so there were 3 trans available in low hump.. powerglide a chevrolet 3 speed- r=3.14, 1=2.94,2=1.683=1 or a (borg) warner 3 speed -r=3.76,1=3.17,2=1.75,3=1 engines available for the ck 10,20,30 were:230 (6), 292 (6), and 283(8)

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
those numbers are part #'s for the frame rails...
check on the top of the frame rail just in front of where the LH motor mount bolts on., or under the cab, also on the top of the lh rail.
