Thumbs up Re: 1966 and later park brake system - layout with photos - no cross member

I was rotating the tires today... and had another angle of the cable that runs from the parking brake handle, through the cab floor to the driver side frame rail...

Woog,

How do you remove the rear cable from the trailing arm bracket (shown in your post #49 and here).

I am trying to remove my trailing arms to get the old rusty bolts out and can't see how to get these cables off. Mine don't seem to have the clip like yours and so (to me) look like they would slip out towards the rear.?

I've separated the rear cable from the intermediate cable already.

Ken,
Show us a photo of yours. I've disassembled a 66 e-brake like the one in the photo as well as a 68. Maybe I can help.

Thanks Lugnutz, mine is very similar to the one posted above.

It doesn't look like I can just yank it through from the back. Maybe it unscrews and comes apart somehow but the section in front of the bracket has no flats for a wrench.

I am probably missing something obvious, which is why I can't find any pictures online. So simple that no one bothered to post a picture.

I can't imagine that your bracket is different from the 1966 bracket I show in the pics below. Maybe it needs some penetrating oil and a pry bar. As I recall, there was nothing to unscrew or loosen. I hope these photos help. This is a 1966 rear control arm e-brake bracket.

Thanks Lugnutz you are right. It just needed a good tug. Mine didn't even have the clips on it (but one fell out from behind when I pulled out the cable).

Anyway they just pull out from the rear.

Mine had a little rubber shield on it that slid out of the way (you can see it at the left of the picture. It looks like a piece of fuel line and it might be). I didn't want to rip it at first but, after it was apart, i could see it just slips on and off.

I am currently converting my 1964 SWB to the 1966 Cable System... I am in need of the measurement on the Trailing arm where I am to drill for the 1966 Mount that will receive the cable from the drum. If you could measure down the trailing arm to the new rivet/bolt hole and provide this measurement I can continue my project. Thank You

Here is a collection of pics I took before I sold the 66 rear control arms I had. I hope this helps. I quarter inch either way shouldn't make any meaningful difference. The pics show the DS control arm.

The '66-'72 C series e-brake cables, hooks and guides are all the same. It should work just fine in your '65.

What a great and useful thread
I collected all the parts I could get to do this conversion , after changing my straight 6 with a manual 3 speed to a V8 with a th350 auto box . The rod on the passenger side is only a straight rod with a spring at the chassis end of it . I couldn't find this part so I am going to make my own .

Since removing the eBrake cable from the rear drums and from the frame is often part of the upgrade process, I thought I'd add a little tip I discovered when I did mine. The 3 pronged clips that hold the cable to the frame and to the rear brake backing plates can be really difficult to remove. This method makes it child's play. Here's a LINK to the same info on my website. Pics for here as well.

I will call inline tube when i order the cables to see which ones i need.
My frame does not have holes in it for the front guides. I need a measurement from s fixed point so i can drill the holes for the little side guides. Should be in front of the trailing arm crossmember a foot or so. Thanks

Ok here are a couple pics. I did not take a pic of the vertical measurement. from the inside of the bottom flange of the frame up to the center of the hole is 1-5/16". The hole is aprox 3/8" diameter.

That is a '69 LWB frame.

I didn't think about it before but it looks like you have a SWB frame?

I apparently was really tired last night. While I do not have a short wheelbase pickup frame, I do have my '66 Suburban which is the same. I will see if I can crawl under there tomorrow. Where it is currently parked is in a tight spot.
