Re: Jegs is at it again

Can any one tell me what the difference is between the 260HP crate motor and the 290HP? Besides the 30 horses and the bigger price tag. Im interested in buying the the 290hp, but my buget is more in the 260hp range. If i were to get either of these two motors I would want to transfer my stock intake, and original quadrajet and ramshorns on to it. Here is a link to the 290motor, i think i saw it on sale once down to $1,950.00 at one time from Jegs. http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet+Perf...99529/10002/-1

The 290 motor also has a Nodular Iron crank. The 260 motor uses a cast-iron crank. If you are thinking about some type of "power adder", then it's probably worth the difference.

Re: Jegs is at it again

I talked to Summit and the 260hp one is actually 195. The 290 is 290 base, before your accessories. I am unsure if that is totally accurate but it made sense to me. Summit advertises the 260hp one as a 195 base and said GM will say the same thing. Still a great deal for that engine. I purchased one a long time ago and ran great.

Interesting series of articles detailing what is possible with this motor.

Tillik - I'm confused about your comment "260hp is actually 195, 290 is 290 base". Can you clarify this? I'm very close to buying the $1,286. Jegs ebay motor for my 67 GMC. I don't need a 400 hp hot rod, but I want good power in my truck.

What he is saying is that with stock exhaust manifolds and intake the eBay motor is rated at 195 hp, but with a good intake and a set of headers it should make 260hp. It all depends on the bolt ons. At least that's what I understand.

Re: Jegs is at it again

When I called Jegs the guy on the phone asked me what bolt-ons I had. After I told him he told me I should get a minimum of 260hp possibly more. If you are considering this engine and want to know what to expect with your current setup just call in and they will give you their best estimate. However, you will never truly know what you will get until it's installed and you're rolling down the road.

Re: Jegs is at it again

I wouldn't trust what anyone says. HP ratings are like Penis size... everyone measures it differently.

With HEI and 4 barrel intake/carb anything in the 220-230 range is going to scoot these 3800 lb trucks along just fine, especially with a 3.73 or 4.11 rear. My 290hp 5.3L moves my 5,600 lb 2000 Z71 xcab just fine, and it's 1,800 lbs heavier.

The GM website calls it 250hp. The above link tested it dead stock with a q-jet at 239hp. With headers it tested at 256, adding an edelbrock intake bumped it to 265.

As with any motor, the sky is the limit.

Its a fine stock style replacement, with a warranty. In my case, I am putting it in a car I am selling, and removing the 500hp, $7k bullet that it has now.

Ordered it 3/19, delivered yesterday. The driver rolled it right into my garage. Can't beat no tax and no shipping charges.

Re: Jegs is at it again

I missed the ebay sale, but called Jegs for some info regarding shipping and warranty. First off, the Jegs guy told me that Ebay actually kicks in some money for the sale, which is why the ebay price is less then Jegs direct. I was told the $1286.00 goes on sale kind of regularly on Ebay, so keep an eye out and it will probably come up again.

I asked if the 3 year warranty applied to our trucks, since the Jegs site says the engine is "not compatible" with my truck (67 GMC) and I assume this applies to most of us on this forum. I was told to call tomorrow afternoon, so the Jegs guy could put me on hold and call GM directly (the warranty is via GM, not Jegs). If you look at Jegs warranty, it says "non cataloged cars and trucks" only have a 12 mos, 12,000 mile warranty. This is important to me, if I buy now but don't install the engine for 3-6 mos.

Lastly, I asked if I could buy now, and have them wait to ship for 2-3 months, until I'm ready to install. The Jegs guy said they can't do this.

I'll post when I hear back from Jegs about the warranty.

Re: Jegs is at it again

Mine arrived. I was really disappointed with the quality of the paint and the application of the valve cover decal. It looks like crap, on both valve covers and one side of the engine. I all I wanted was a nice looking and running engine, but I didn't get one. I don't want to install it in my truck looking like that.

Oh well, you get what you pay for.

The age of our trucks knock us into the 12 month warranty. When I called JEGS he also said he called GM and that was the response he got.

You're kidding right?

I have 3 sets of crate engine valve covers on a shelf. Now I have to go see if they have runs in them and the sticker is straight. LOL

Kidding about what? I bought the engine with the intent to install it as purchased. I cannot do that with this engine because it looks like crap. The runs, the fisheyes, the partially unpainted freeze plugs, the crooked valve cover decal do not meet my expectations.

Re: Jegs is at it again

wes, I'm with you - I'd be kinda pissed too. I'd certainly contact jegs, BUT, this is a GM crate motor that they are re-selling, so not sure how they could help.

Could at least ask Jeg's to send you a new valve cover - or ask them to give you a MASSIVE discount on the valve covers of your choice that they sell - or other add-ons, (carb/mani/etc).

I'd be confident that it's put together well, but cosmetics aren't that important to the assembly line guy that slaps the decal on 200 engines a day. I feel for you - it's your money and if the dude had spent an extra 30 seconds in assembly or given half a crap, you'd be an ecstatic excited customer right now.

Why not send a picture to Jegs and see what they have to say about it?

Re: Jegs is at it again

Jocko, I don't see how Jegs is responsible for this. The purchase and shipping were painless. I'm off tomorrow and will contact my local Chevy dealer's parts department and work my way up the GM chain. I'm not happy about the fisheyes and runs on the valve cover. If GM would give me two replacement valve cover decals, I would strip and re-spray the covers myself.

I'm disappointed in the quality of my engine, but I'm just about over it.

Zoomin, I think GM should make this right, but depending how things go, I may contact Jegs. If I do, I'll just see what they can do, I won't have any expectations or make any demands from them.

Re: Jegs is at it again

Well...Iddon't know if anyone has checked the price. I went to purchase one on the 28th and the price has gone up $300 now. I just wanted to let everyone know as I tried to post the new price but couldn't find this original posting. But the Jeggs rep I talked to did say that they would price match any lower offer I find. SSoiIwent looking and Jeggs does sell this engine online i guess at their higher price since i saw someone say that Ebay helps them offset thwe price to give us the deal of $1200..
