Re: A Sad Story About a 1971 Chevy Cheyenne

This whole thing kinda sounds fishy... Look at this thread (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=451253) as it looks as though you were planning to do a frame swap on your truck. No trying to accuse you of anything but that does question this whole topic a little bit on who may be the one who actually got taken.

Not sure quite what you are getting at there.

Sounds like he thinks she stole the truck and was trying to cover it up by doing a frame swap. Thats what I got out of his comment.

I was under the assumption she had a 2wd and was going to covert it to 4x4, when i read that thread in the spring.

I am not the crook so don't try to point fingers at me please. I have been through enough heartache to last a life time.

I do not think you are a crook. So please do not take what I said wrong. I was just saying what I took his comment as. I think it is a crappy situation you are in and I wish you the best of luck getting part of your truck back of finding another to replace it.

Should have had the seller you bought it from - sign it over when bought.
If the original owner took the frame/truck back, you will have to go after the person you bought it from - to recoup your money. Small claims court if under 5K.

Re: A Sad Story About a 1971 Chevy Cheyenne

Yeah that stinks, I believe here (oklahoma) and maybe federal law that chassis/frame VIN # overrides any other because the others are easily swapped. but they are always registered by the VIN on the body as mine was, I had to drive my non street legal or safe truck to the tag office and also go back to the shop to get my dash cluster so they could see the odometer but they never looked at the frame VIN. and i have seen correct GM reproduction vin tag rivets for sale i dont remember if it was on ebay or a resto catalog but you can find them.
Everyone should learn about their own state registration laws and the state registration laws you bought the truck from since this can cause a heck of a headache as i experienced with mine. apparently GA (where my baby came from) doesn't title vehicles from 198? and older just a bill of sale is legal but the one who gave you the bill of sale MUST have been the last registered owner by tag (license plate record) or else the bill of sale is worthless. I had to hire a title specialist to file lean paperwork with OK and GA state vehicle registration offices and wait a few months to get mine all straightened out.
then again some states you can drag a truck out of a cow pasture , walk into a tag office with a VIN# and get a builders title in a few days.
Please people when you go look at a truck take a wire brush (to remove the surface rust/paint) and get the VIN off the frame on the top driver side frame rail between the upper control arm and steering gear box. if it doesn't match the door jamb VIN have the seller write a bill of sale for the frame and have it notarized to cover your butt.
No I didn't know all this before I bought my truck but I sure will check my next one !
and for everyone if you didn't already know as far as originality 72 is the only year that the rear view mirror was attached to the windshield, 67-71 will have holes in the inner roof to mount the rear view, and 67 has different vent windows (extra holes and different vent handle) also the early trucks(67-68?) had a "hand" Ebrake under the dash. the later years had a "foot" Ebrake. there are a few other minor yet specific details that can help identify what year your parts and truck really are
I hope you find a new baby soon, and fight for the rest of the truck that wasnt theirs to begin with ! ,

Re: A Sad Story About a 1971 Chevy Cheyenne

I agree that it must really suck for you, But on the flip side of the coin what about the guy that had his truck stolen? If it was truely his truck then he has every right to get it back. What if you were in his shoes? I mean it sounds like they swapped just enough stuff to make it look different, but left some parts that would still stand out- like the bent bumper.

I would be absolutely pissed if I had a truck stolen, seen some of my parts on a truck driving around town, called the cops and they verified that MY vin was on the frame, and that the trucks vin was different, but was not a stolen truck. Its a gray area for sure, but I think the right thing to do would be to give him his truck back and let him rebuild from there.

Looks like you got the bad end of the deal and were just a victim of not knowing any better than to check ALL vins on the truck. What about the guy that you bought it from? Are the police going after him??
