Tax returns are coming... may have to get new tires. And quickly use the old ones. Once the engine is back together...

That's funny, reminds me of when I was a young punk and what a joyous occasion it was when some buddy would call up and say he was going to get new tires. We'd proceed to utterly terrorize the neighborhood laying down rubber, slamming on brakes at stop lights and watching pedestrians jump out of their skin etc.Great fun when your 17.

Re: Higher speedometers...

Sooooo....
Back to the original thread (and moving away from people's stupid driving habits which endanger me, my wife, and my daughter out on the highways and byways)
I messed around with an extra cluster I had laying around. It is a speedo out of a 1971 Monte. The car was an automatic so it has a cut-out in the speedo for the pernandle (PRNDL2L1). I'm guessing that a factory 3 or 4 speed car will not have this cut out.
This was just a midwinter, proof of concept thing. Any of the three gauges in the Monte cluster would work where ever you wanted them. The original truck numbers could be buffed off like I did for my aftermarket tach. If you really needed to know when you are going over 100 in your truck, the Monte speedo would take you to 120.
Remember, the standard Monte dash is the same as the upgraded Chevelle dash.

Yes I got 175K out of that Monte before the body just couldn't take the salt any more.

Why are the fuel gauges on older GM vehicles so BIG? Its like they think were that dumb

I agree, the clock would look sharp in there.

That's not nearly as bad as a light that comes on to "remind you" that you're low on fuel

Or the LOW display in the info screen... Next thing you know you'll get a call from OnStar telling you the nearest gas station.

Re: Higher speedometers...

The reason the gas gauge is so big is so you can watch it move as you drive.

Actually that 71 Monte was pretty easy on gas. it got 23 mpg on the open road. It had a 2bbl, 350, and 2.73 rear end gears. It was a bit of a dog off the line but on the open road she really came alive.

After my truck is done I want to get my 72 Malibu into that basic configuration. I'm either going to leave the 2.73 in it or put in a 3.73 and a 700r4. I spend 90% of my drive to work at 70+ mph. It sure would be a heck of a lot more fun doing that in a 72 Malibu verses a 94 Escort.

Here's the 4.10 truck with 29 or 30 inch tall tires... I can't remember where the tach needle was... I think it was just north of 4000

Re: Higher speedometers...

What speed do each of the gears get up to? EX, 1st redlines at 45mph, 2nd redlines at 70, etc...The rearend is the original.

I have no trans, and was J/W while I make a choice. Its either a rebuilt turbo 350, or a 700R4 my dad has in storage

Re: Higher speedometers...

funny story actually a little off the subject but a buddy of mine built a 350 chevy and put it in his 77 cheyenne, 4.10 posi and we took my gps out in it one day on hwy 212, we hit 130 , then we hit a bump, then we looked at each other and then he let off the gas, like stated earlier "ADRENALINE RUSH"

anyways did anyone find info on camaro gauges?

Search for the FAQ, it has a thread or two about the camaro guages.

Re: Higher speedometers...

let my truck fly a couple months ago and the speedo got stuck at 85mph, but my bro said that he was doing 80mph when i passed him and he went up to 90mph and said that i kept pullin away from him but my speedo never went over 85mph, and fwiw my speedo reads 5mph under cause of taller tires so i was actually doing 90

Re: Higher speedometers...

Ok, not a pick-up or even car story, but...
When I lived in Dallas, back in probably about 1987. A friend of mine gave me a ride on a FJ1100 "race" bike... we were on I-35E... just north of I-635... headed to Lewisville... Just flying, I mean FLYING........ Got pulled over by Dallas cop... said he clocked us (yes, 2 people on the bike) doing 173mph...
Luckily, the cop was a motorcycle guy, reduced it down to 90mph so he didn't have to take us to jail... Cop was laughing the whole time. True Story...
Also, I never let him give me a ride again... I thought I was going to die...

Can I ask for details on that horn button? I like it. Is it a late model GM truck steering wheel?

JC whitney sells those buttons, and some real cheesey ones too... goes right in place of the stock button on the late model wheels... s-10, full size trucks, astro van... maybe full size vans too... not sure on that though.
