Thanks, hope we can collaborate on some cool parts. Sent you a pm to discuss some ideas I have...

I haven't been able to make it down to the body shop. He's been busy so no room to work on it there with other vehicles in the way...
I've also had a lot of family activities (2 birthdays) and responsibilities around the house plus been working on several consoles and tach dashes I've sold.

Will try to at least get the parts laid out and pictures taken by the beginning of next week.

Thanks, hoped to have time to lay out all the parts today but ended up finally getting help and good weather (rain was forecast but was a nice day) to be able to fix my home's storm damage....

For those that hadn't seen...the June 30th derecho dropped a tree on my house that thankfully only damaged the soffits and gutters and a couple small areas of the roof...

Re: Project#1: Bright Horizons - 68 Swb on Air

I still haven't received the insurance money yet (waiting on the mortgage company to sign off on the check)...but have been doing my best to get things fixed...got the tree cleared out (mostly by myself with help from my father)...caught a guy cutting trees at a neighbors yard and got a good deal felling the rest of the tree and they hauled it away...

Today came the real work. My father came over to help me by not only handing (throwing) the tools up to me on the ladder but had a great idea (more on that in a bit) and helped hold the boards up and a lot more....couldn't have done it without him!

Found a hole in the porch roof I had missed from the ground so I had to remove an area of shingles, fix the hole from the inside, seal it, and reinstall the shingles. Thankfully it's completely separate from the house and no water damage has been caused at all and now it's sealed. Got the facia board removed and replaced, put up the decorative facia and fixed the broken ceiling of the porch and the damaged first two rows of shingles. Thankful I found a good match at Home depot.

Still have to caulk and do some painting and then the leafguard gutters will be replaced but it's watertight for now!

Re: Project#1: Bright Horizons - 68 Swb on Air

The main challenge came at the center of the main portion of the house where the tree hit. It had crushed the plywood , tore the shingles and tar paper, and broke the end off one of the rafters. So I had to repair that before fixing the soffits obviously.

That's where my dad's great idea comes into play and where this is "somewhat relevant" to trucks

disclaimer....don't laugh....it worked

He asked if we could somehow use one of my jacks to jack up the damaged section. So we started with a bottle jack but it was too tight to get in the space even with it all the way lowered. Next...we started using engineering....redneck engineering

I've actually helped a brother in law jack up his home using a large jack and a piece of wood so I thought...why not?

this is way up there...18 feet.....

soooo...what can we find???

Well, I built a deck a couple years ago and have some extra lumber under the deck so out comes a 4x4x12 post....

still a little short....

so....

Re: Project#1: Bright Horizons - 68 Swb on Air

In case anyone else has a trilevel house and is wondering...it takes three 8" rally wheels (5 lug preferred ) and one 6" rally wheel/tire to get to the proper level

Here's the finished product.....with my father proud of our invention

And it worked flawlessly. Rotated the jack to move from one area to the next and added some bracing to keep the plywood solid. Then added the facia...actually got everything done with the white decorative board but forgot to take pictures...

I did take one more picture though....I walked back to eyeball the roof line to make sure we had it jacked up to the right height and on my way back the handle on the jack was down at about eye level as I looked up.....

...just about took out my eye...thankfully only blunt trauma on my forehead and a slight scratch on my nose....could have been a lot worse...

Re: Project#1: Bright Horizons - 68 Swb on Air

You can see the jack handle down about my eye level in the picture...makes my head hurt just looking at it

You can also see that roof work is dirty

Thanks, we feel grateful! I should have been walking up the front porch about when that railing got smushed like that...but a tree in the road kept me away for 1/2 hour until the storm was over and we could move the tree...

Re: Project#1: Bright Horizons - 68 Swb on Air

Oh....and a finished shot of the house (before caulking and paint touch ups...)

Need to power wash the house still and plan to clean the roof also so the new shingles don't stick out so much....color match is actually good but the old ones have tree dirt/mold on them so the new ones look a lot lighter...also need a couple good hot, sunny days for the shingles to lay back down...but once the gutters are up; the shingles shouldn't be that noticeable at all anyways...

All those pictures and no comments?

Okay, some progress on the truck today! Got the bed unloaded, cleaned out, and the started repairs. Have one more spot to finish then some grinding and primer to protect it then some dents to work out. Going back tomorrow to hopefully finish.
