Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

so here are the numbers:

back of block: 3999290
front of block: T0422CTB
head: 6272292
head is also stamped GM10T

based on what i found on the net for these numbers, it looks like this is actually a 402 2-bolt main out of a 1972 car. appears to be 240hp LS3. might be a tall deck.

here are some pics.

going to get the truck on sunday.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

lol Bob needs to calm down a little... i think he would have drooled all over the motor if he had went with and heard it run!

one thing is for sure, its not a little motor with the way it made the truck work on the way home....start climbing a hill in OD and by the time we where about 1/4 ways up the hill it had dropped 3 gears.

sweet buy though man, a good sound old school big block isn't easy to come by.

oh and by the way, we put about 600 miles on the truck this weekend by the time i got home... lol

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

ok ok... here are a few pictures from today.

Started off the day around 9 to go pick up the trailer and drop some stuff in the dumpster at my friends work. Then we headed out to Newton to pick up Bob 67327 and head out to get the truck. we did the old "pull it up on the trailer with another truck trick" and it worked very well. Here are a few shots of us getting it loaded and tied down:

And we were off. I tried to snap a few pics of it in the mirror, but this is the only one that turned out half decent.

So then we get it home and start unloading it. We had my buddy matt, my 13 year old and myself trying to push the thing off the trailer. It was slow, but we finally got the back half off. then we decided to use the '03 to help out and pushed the whole truck and trailer back to the garage (my driveway has a slight slope to it). We needed a little help behind the wheel, so i asked my wife to hop in and steer a bit. Lets just say she wasn't overly happy with the former mouse condo in the headliner

She'll kill me for posting this pic, but oh well. while she was sitting in it, she said the following:

"This is gonna be MY truck"
"I like it"
"The next project is going to be a "chitty chitty bang bang" car"

So in the span of 5 min my truck gets stolen, I get the green light to build it, and i get the green light for another project. Woot!!

anyways, so we finish getting it unloaded. Here's a shot of me not really doing much good. Although right about then is when i came up with the idea on how to get it off the trailer. Floor jack!

And here's the money shot. truck in the garage, 67-72 poster on the wall, and big block on the stand.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

random interior shot. everything is real good inside. There is a hole on each side in the floor, but nothing major and nothing that can't be fixed easily. rockers and cab corners are 100% there and so are the running boards.

So here's where it sits for ride height right now.

The plan is to remove 12 of those 13 inches.

So we got the bed off, and about took down the garage door opener while we were at it. great thing about this truck, 2 people can handle the bed. Unlike a 67-72 where you need 6 or more.

Now here's the coolest thing I've found so far. When we pulled the hub caps off, on the inside of one I found this:

So we started working on the front clip, but the kids had to go to bed, so we couldn't be loud. We had a few stubborn bolts to deal with, and getting the grinder out would of pissed off the wife. So, we'll finish that up tomorrow.

So there you have it. Day one of the Bumper Punchin' build.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

So the plans for now are:
  1. Get the front clip pulled
  2. Get the engine and tranny pulled
  3. Clean the frame front to back
  4. POR 15 the frame
  5. Start boxing the frame... front to back

I have a couple weeks yet before I can do the shopping I need to do, so we should have lots of time to get these done. I figure we have 28' of frame to box, equaling 48' of welding and grinding to do. uhg!

I also had a call with Jepf at Scotts Hot Rods on friday and am seriously leaning toward using them for both the front and rear setup on this project. Jepf was really helpful and I think it's going to save me a ton of time if they build the stuff and send it over.

btw, i wanted to say thanks to those of you following this build, and my past build. It's awesome to get the feedback you all give and it really provides a lot of motivation to do it, and do it right. I can say that without any doubt at all, that if it wasn't for this forum, the people, and the knowledge here, I would of never done my last build, and would have never even considered this one.

The best part is, my wife and kids are getting involved and are enjoying it. Today my 13 year old helped a ton and got rewarded with being able to use a grinder to take a bolt out for the first time. Seems simple, but he felt good about it, and i felt good teaching him about how to use one.

ok, enough of that... time to go clean the garage

That is tight man. Nothing like getting a project home. And the dates in the caps is too cool! I hope you keep those, even if they are hanging on the wall. Good luck, and keep posting pics.

And I like the idea of removing 12 of the 13 inches of ride height lol

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

got some time tonight, so we went to work on the front end. Not a lot to say here. pretty much an issue free break down of the front end.

I did forget to measure where the center of the front axle was though. i tried to figure it out based on the distance from the from leaf mount, but that moves, so I'm gonna post over in the 47-59 section to see if someone can tell me where the center should be from the end of the frame rail.

When i do the rear, i'll make sure to measure first

here's some pics!

clip's gone...

Engine's gone...

Axle's gone...

I did make some progress on the vertical issue. i actually made a lot more, but was to lazy to pull the jack stands and measure it again.

Great progress Levi, I'm glad to see that you got the new project home in one piece.

Good luck with the rest of the build!
