Re: 71 c30 project

So I haven't had alot if time this past week to work on much, between overtime at work and school plays had more important things to do. I did however start to welding in my notch for the steering when my old welder crapped out on me, luckily tis the season for marked down prices and I scored a new Hobart so now I am ready to get back on it. I did have a little time today before having to stop and get ready to go to work, to weld up that notch and fill a few holes.

Re: 71 c30 project

Well I haven't worked on the frame that much, I did get the driver side notch finish and while crawling around on the floor I realized one thing...That I am to dang big (6'7" 300+) to be rolling a round in the floor for the rest of the frame work.. I cant remember but it seems like I saw this, on this forum but this is what I came up with..

As I was leaving for work today I found I had a box of goodies waiting for me on the porch, my dimple dies set from TRMcustoms. Anyway here is a preview of what the upper arms will look like..

Re: 71 c30 project

Ok guys I have a question for everybody out there. You all know that I have a Cummins 6bt slated for this project, but after switching to a c10 frame I am worried about the frame handling the torque from the motor. I have been toying with the idea of boxing the frame but I don't know #1 if I really need to and #2 how much of the frame I need to box if I do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 71 c30 project

Personally I'd box as much of the frame as possible but thats just me. I like to go totally over board.

HAHA! Yeah I can be a bit of a Captain Overkill myself, I was leaning toward as much as possible but I didn't want to take all of the flex out of the frame and cause breakage in some other area.

Re: 71 c30 project

Hey guys hope everybody has had a great holiday. I have been busy with family and haven't been able to work on the truck much. But I was able to break away a little today and have come across some thing I need some advice on. I have one of my porterbuilt notches fitted to the frame loosely bolted working off a plumbob and center line. I am on the other side and have done the same thing and before I drilled and bolted I took some measurements off the front and back of the notch to the rear of the frame and I am 3/16's off from one to the other but dead on my center line?? Any suggestions...

Check out Rusbuilt's "Darcy" build thread. He had the same issue. As long as your rearend isn't making contact with the notch you should be fine. I only say that because of the various post I have read that mention the same issue your having with your notch.

Re: 71 c30 project

Also I have been measuring various body mounts from one side to the other and the drivers side mounts are setting back an 1/8 more than the passenger side .. and the drivers side notch is the one I am trying to get figured out now.. frame is not damaged either.. idk. I guess I will be calling PB tomorrow and see what they say..
