Sometimes looking in the assembly manual will make you not want to look in the assembly manual. There is NO rhyme or reason to the layout of the book that I can see. It is like they sent an intern to the copier room to make a copy of it and the intern tripped on the way sending papers flying. Being in a hurry to get back to the binding dept, he just grabbed all the papers up however, and the binding dept did not look either

I found references to every mirror used except the 72 DG4 and every drawing is only of the drivers door which would lead me to believe they are the same, but that is just my guess

I thought I would bump this back to the top. There was a question asked about measurements a couple of days ago.

I am in the process of freshening mine up and installing them on the '72 C30. I didn't see a reference on this in the thread but I noticed on mine the studs on the ends of the elbows were different lengths. Mirror ends were shorter than the bracket ends.

This is a work truck so I am not rebuilding with new parts but just cleaning up what is there.....

My originals are the same. I believe the longer studs are necessary due to having to pass through 2 thicknesses of the flattened mounting bracket legs versus the thinner mirror bracket. It would make sense since the acorn nuts have limited depth.

Has anyone checked into the Colony Machine chrome peaked acorn nuts? I put their engine kit on my Harley. Where Harley used a bolt, Colony provided a stud and peaked acorn nut, as Stocker suggested

After finding a set of DG4's and associated hardware many many months ago I'm finally ready to install my mirrors but have a few questions to clarify before dropping off at the body shop.

A little background, my SPID has the DG4's listed as an option, but during a prior repaint the owner changed to the Sport Mirrors. I LOVE the DG4's and more importantly I want my truck the way it should be. The Sport mirrors / backing plates are now with Cliff (72 Jimmy Power) in South SF so there's no turning back on this project.

When I disassembled the doors and looked inside I can see where the body guy used bondo/fiberglass to fill the holes. On the outside of the doors and in the right light I can see faint signs of where the holes used to be.

Anyway, onto my questions.

When I measure from the leading door edge to the top hole it is 7.25" (7-1/4") on Drivers side, but on the Passenger side I come up with 8.25" (8-1/4") - arrow on green piece of tape in picture, a 1" difference. I confirmed those are the old holes by using my paint gauge as it reads 0 when I put it on the hole. Anyone else out there with these measurements? Or is the 8.25" right for both sides?

I was originally going to use the factory sheet metal bolts, but then the body shop guy starting talking about "Rivnuts" / "Nutserts" and when I looked at some videos these seem to be a much better method to secure the mirrors, has anyone done this? Any horror stories I should know?

Observations, 1. the leading edge of where the inner & outer door skins meet just so happens to be 8.25" as well, coincidence? 2. was the drivers side mounted closer to the front of the truck because a person in the drivers seat would want the mirror further away to have a larger side / rear view and on the passenger side the mounting would be back further from the front so the vent window frame did not obstruct your view?

All holes will be welded closed, no bondo this go around.

Found lots of pictures showing how the mirror mounts to the arm, but really good pic of the tripod bracket. So here's my question, what is the sequence of nylon / metal washers that are to be used? # 1 , # 2 or # 3 ?

1. L arm,metal washer, nylon washer, bracket, nylon washer, bracket, nylon washer, metal washer, bullet acorn nut
2. L arm,metal washer, nylon washer, bracket (NO nylon washer) bracket, nylon washer, metal washer, bullet acorn nut
3. "Other" please describe and/or attach picture.

1972 DG4's if that matters.

My recollection is it’s like #2 but there were additional fiber washers that need to be accounted for in terms of spacing.

If my memory serves me right it's because of the vent window being in the line of sight if you use the drivers side measurement on the passenger side. They move the passenger side further back so the view is clear.

I know these are not the mirrors you are using but just thought I would add this. The shop manuals I have have no measurements for adding them even though they show them. The written part doesn't even say what they are. That one paragraph is all it states on them. I checked all 3 of my manuals for this.

Interesting and informative thread on the DG4 mirrors. I'm just not sure how many different types were made, but I think GM got them from a few various suppliers and just called them all DG4.

Here's one I found on ebay, supposedly original and I don't doubt it, but it's not what I was after.

Next question, using the 1972 mirror installation instructions as reference, the drawing shows a "gasket" between the mounting arms and the door skin, what is this "gasket"? Is it simply a nylon washer or ?

Fwiw i thought these were little rubber O gaskets. At least thats what i used. Once installed they cant be seen. Camper mirrors came w a rubber strip for use as a gasket across the top attachment to the door.

Since I wasnt going for originality I used nylon washers .

I can't give a definitive answer for the 1972 version, but I am 100% sure that, at least my '69, never had anything between the mirror brackets and the paint.. In other words they were mounted metal leg to painted door metal. I always thought it was odd but not surprising.

I've been searching for a while and I have what I think are the closest to the original High Crown Acorn nut: 3/8" - 16. I have yet to obtain a stainless steel version that is even close to the original.
