As you can see James had to cut all the paint off the hood... It's so thin there is no way I would blast it. I ordered the pads to replace and plan to urethane it to see if we can stiffen it a bit. Any thoughts on that? Anyway here is what I left an hour ago.

I like K36 that is some great stuff. Just wondering if they had changed the receipe up any. It use to would stick to everything, over spray, which was good, but it was hard as a rock when it dryed. Very hard to sand. Still loved it for a sealer or trim out primer, good product. DP 90 black epoxy is real good too. truck's looking good.


What acid etch primer are you using?

I've never used anything other than the k36 because my dad started using it years ago... I'm still learning here but it sands a little harder than some of the cheap stuff. I can't remember the number of the sealer except that it's a DP something. The body shop where my friend has worked for the last 30 years are all ppg so we use what they say for the most part.

Acid etch we use the U-tech... not sure of the numbers. We have something PPG in the cabinet also. I used U-tech on all this and we used it on the 56 last year with no issues.

I use to paint and body at the local Chevy dealership, 7 years total. We started out PPG then had to go to another brand for cost purposes. I really like the DP90. Ive used it for a top coat on a repaired lawnmower deck, that was over 6 years ago it is still holding up great, really good product. I use it on my sandblasted areas, but have seen others use it for a blocking primer. Use it on fiberglass too, for a sealer then over coat with a building primer for blocking. Everybody does it different. I don't use acid etch on blased areas just because a tech at one of the PPG classes said it would be to heavy of build up in the blasted pours of the metal and actually cause damage over time, he recomended epoxy blasted and bear fiberglass and acid etch sanded bear metal, so thats what I've always done. NCP250 was great blocking primer made by PPG, Im sure they've come out with some different stuff now but K36, DP90, and NCP250 were my 3 favorite ones to work with.


Ive always been curious how and what others use, you can always learn or find something new.

Thanks guys! Here are a few of the mess we got into on the bed... Somewhere in the last 40 years it got wacked down the side above the fender well. Rather than pull any of the dent and creased area out they just covered it with bondo... not even any fiberglass just straight bondo. I used the old school dent puller after drilling a thousand spots and got it pretty close. Welded it up and moved to the other side.

I hope maybe this coming weekend to have the body work done...

Great progress on the truck. Just wondering why you plugged the heater box holes on the firewall, are you putting in an after market AC unit? This thread making me want to get out to the garage.

Thanks, as you well know it's been a lot of work so far. Your welcome to stop in anytime. James helps me out every Saturday with the bodywork/paint stuff. I hope to get the paint together this week for it. If everything goes to plan I just need to 600 with the da real lightly and spray the sealer.

Looks like paint is in the not too distant future???

Seems like there is never enough room but yeah the extra space helps a bunch. With all the sanding though it makes an extra large mess to keep up with also.

Well I finally got started on the paint!!! Going with the medium blue and white two tone. Here are some shots of the weekends work. We got the interior of the bed done. Underside of the hood and interior of the cab. Today I shot the top of the dash with satin black and worked on some of the little pieces. It's a work in progress...

I stuck the one wheel housing outside to see what it really looked like. The snow didn't hurt for a background. I love the color.
