I have paid to have mine installed twice by a "professional glass man" and still don't have a well seated windshield/trim.

When I bought my '71, the PO had put fresh glass in front and back, after reading this, I'm glad he did! What he did not do, however, was put the trim around the windshield before installing it. Is it possible to get the trim snapped into place with the windshield already in? Thanks!

It is not possible to put the trim in the gasket after it is installed in the truck. In fact, if the trim pops out of the groove as you are putting the windshield in, you have to pull it all out again and start from scratch.

Suddenly, that trim doesn't seem so important.

Post 19 has PDF file that shows a cross section of the gasket, glass and trim installed. The trim locks in behind the glass.

I have heard every which way to do this. I had done mine rope from the top down, making sure to get the upper corners correct.

Still leaks even with both Butyl Sealant, and Some other gooey rubbery sticky crap.

The trim went in on the 2nd attempt, popped back out. I bought another no trim gasket to attempt maybe again.

Life goes on leaks or no leaks.

Indeed! After reading through the horror stories here, I'm happy he replaced the glass. It seems to sit well and does not leak. No way I'm taking the chance of screwing that up to get the trim in place!

Well I went and got the '67-70 trim this week. So the trim and gasket are now matched up. I put the gasket on the glass to get it to relax some. Also got some good news from my son inlaw. He found someone to install the glass for me. Good thing the guy asked all the right questions that showed he had installed some before.

I dont blame you. Hope it all works out. I have been reading this thread since the beginning, and it has been both entertaining and educational. I'm not a hundred percent sure that some of the installs have some measure of luck involved. A young man could pick this lost art up and make some serious side money.

Not really that hard with the right tools and some knowledge that is available. The right tools and patience are key. If you have mechanical ability, it can be done. If you need a YouTube video with instructions to tell you which way to turn a nut you should not try this. Dealing with aftermarket trim makes the process much harder, if not impossible.

After reading about all of the trouble with installing the windshield and getting it to seal I got out my service manual and read the install the windshield section. The book says to place the rope with a big loop at the top of the windshield in the middle and both ends at the bottom in the middle. With a helper pushing in on the windshield you pull first one of the rope ends till you are 2 inches from the top corner. Then you pull the other end of the rope till it is 2 inches from the top corner. Then pull one side of the loop at the top to 2 inches of the top corner and repeat with the other side of the loop till it is 2 inches from the top corner. The next step is to pull both the lower end of the rope and the top end of the rope ( you are at the top corner ) at the same time. Slowly pulling the gasket into the corner. Repeat with the other top corner. It says to use a popsicle stick to help with the placement of the gasket. Seal the corners 6 inches along the top and 6 inches down the sides from the top corners.

I think you could add the urethane after, tape off the pillar and the rubber, use some 3/16 cord where you want to seal, fresh tube with small outlet. Work the nose in under the cord , pull the cord slowly out while you caulk.

I take it the little loop getting in between the pinch well and gasket and you have tip trailing in the direction of travel. Correct?

I think the loop your referencing in the end of the pump gun is actually the tip plug they provide to use when your done pumping sealant under the gasket edge so the tip doesn't get plugged up with sealant . Let's clarify some things .

1) The CRL sealant isn't used until the windshield is fully installed and only if you have a leak .

2) Assemble your windshield and seal /trim a week before you intend to install , When your stretching the glass seal onto the windshield it becomes "alive" and wants to shrink back to it's original size ( This makes it harder to install in the trim and Install the windshield in your truck ) Think about it when these trucks were built on the line they weren't stretching seals onto the glass as the truck rolled up to them ,They were already done ,seal and trim already installed on the glass picked up by one of the guys on the line ,Dropped into the opening and centered by another guy on the other side of the truck while a third guy pulled the rope from inside the truck and was totally installed in minutes .if not faster .

3) butyl tape ( Like the type referenced below from NAPA) should be applied to the outside of the windshield pinch weld on each top corner about 8-9" across the top from the corner and down the side about the same distance NO other sealant should be used until it's needed after your done .

4) Never use Urethane / silicone / marine sealant or really anything else to seal your windshield before during or after installing your new glass .

5) The only lube that should be used to aide the install is glass cleaner or mild dish soap/water in a spray bottle .

6 I see lots of pictures of fresh painted trucks without the 4 body seams around the windshield without the seams sealed before paint and then they wonder why it leaks ? Always seal those 4 seams BEFORE you paint it or it's going to leak like crazy ,

Thanks for the clarification Grumpy. Looks like I need to add the trim to the glass and let it set for awhile. Hopefully I can start on it tomorrow. I am ASSUMING that I should follow the glass curve when setting the trim and not worry about the pinchwell curve. Correct?

Had the same problem with my trim when I installed the windshield. The after market replacement windshield is thinner from the OEM which caused the trim not to site all the way flush. I took it to a glass shop that does street rods / hot rods and they had the same problem.

OEM seal with an OEM windshield if possible is the best way to go. After market is a crap shoot.

Well while I am waiting for my glasses guy to grace me with his presence, it's been two weeks, thought I would put the window trim on. I wanted to see how well it fit. The side pieces followed the control of the glass good and I had no issues there. The top trim was another matter. I ended up cutting three reliefs on each side to get it to lay flat.

I will be adding the little trim pieces after I rewatch the video.
