I've seen it before. Only thing I can figure is caused by high voltage in the cap as the rotor spins is vaporizing minute particles of the distributor cap and/or rotor and the dust stick to the metal surfaces as a way of discharging. I never worried about it. I just use spray electrical cleaner and compressed air. Just my 2 cents. I can't believe there is no one else in the Denver area on this board that can't stop by you place and give you some on sit help.

Re: loosing spark now

My buddy has been wrenching on and racing chevys since before he had his license.but just started new job going thru divorce and in middle of moving.so can only help thru text.i just wanted to make sure wasnt a symptom of something larger.i figured maybe was from coil burning out.there are no burns on cap or rotor from coil frying.no cracks either only thing i see is the tabs in cap that rotor fires on all have a lil dot from firing.all day i have just been reading up on badics of engine repair in lincholn tech text books.a lot does not pertain to my truck but the basics apply to all vehichles.just tryin to round up a jump.but everyone has weekends off and i have sun-tues. I guess will be on the road when its meant to be

Re: loosing spark now

Without me going back over all these 60 + posts, let me get this right. You have good battery power and the engine spins over fine. It just will not start and run? You mention while checking for spark from the distributor you got shocked so there must be power to the distributor and out of it, if I understand you correctly. If so it becomes a matter of timing.
Have you turned the distributor either direction?
I know it's hard working by yourself sometimes but you can do it.

Re: loosing spark now

Yup.i had my son bump it till i knew it was on number one.then i pulled distributor out totally made sure rotar was lined up with number one.left it loose so i could adjust it as needed and no go.it back fired thru carb so thought it was going to fire up.but still no go no matter which way i rotated it.but thankfully sounds like my buddy who races can swing thru tomorrow as long as nothing changes.so crossing my cingers.one question i still have is what gauge wire should i use for the power to dist. I have read anywhere from 6 to 12 gauge i tried six and ten gauge and nothin.i have read countless post countless places.problem is only people who post what fixed it it was module.people who have ruled out module quit posting never stating what the problem was.

Re: loosing spark now

So you have power to the plugs if it's backfiring through the carb. The distributor could just be 180* out. It just needs to be timed correctly now. Your buddy will get you going I'm sure.

Re: loosing spark now

I put it back on exact same location and direction it came off when i did initial tune up when bought it.i also rechecked firing order on net and cross checked my plug wires and everything seems correct.but who knows at this point.but i have faith my buddy can fix it.we been friends since first grade and are 40.he has been racing chevys and imca modifieds since 14 on dirt tracks if he cant get me rolling i dont know who can lol.

Re: loosing spark now

So my buddy got stuck working late.i fix distributor without a doubt now.and by no means am i a great mechanic.it still wont fire when i know without a doubt its on number one.fogive me if i miss phrase any thing.but hear is what i have determined by looking at timing marks on harmonic balancer and how far notch is off.one of two things happened the pin its keyed with is sheared of and outer ring has rotated severely throwing the timing off majorly.or there is a problem with the timing chain.again i admit my knowledge is very limited.so i wanted to ask if this is a plausabe explanation.from reaserching on various site and a few links i found on here this seems to happen.but again i dont know how to determine which of these two it is.any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: loosing spark now

It is quite possible it's the timing chain. Your buddy sounds quite competent and will have it figured out in ten minutes I bet. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Re: loosing spark now

I am sure he will lol its just a matter of getting together.these two options are my best guesses that i found.and ran past him before posting it here.he said both could very well be and then said he would be glad to trade me titles for his lil dodge and then drive off in my chevy in less than 30 minutes.i have several people who say if i pay em they can fix it lol but i dont want someone to do it and me not learn.i want someone to help me learn to fish so i can eat forever not someone to hand me a fish.lol.

Re: loosing spark now

OK COIL BURNED OUT.I BOUGHT A NEW ONE.THE NEW ONE COMES WITH THE LIL CONTACT WITH SPRING ATATCHED AND A RUBBER BUSHING.WHEN I REPLACED COIL PIT THE NEW CONTACT AND BUSHING.WHEN I TOOK OUT OLD CONTACT I TOOK OLD BUSHING FROM BELOW IT.WHEN I INSTALLED. THE NEW CONTACT I PLACED THE BUSHING IN FIRST THEN CONTACT.THE EXACT SAME WAY I REMOVED IT.TURNS OUT THE NEW BUSHING WAS SLIGHTLY THICKER THAN OLD ONE.SO CONTACT WAS NOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO ROTOR TO SPARK.MY BUDDY PUT OLD ONE BACK IN.AND THE TRUCK FIRED RIGHT UP FIRST TRY.HE DROVE 20 MINUTES YO GET TO MY HOUSE AND HAD TRUCK RUNNING IN 2.5 MINUTES LMAO.....WHAT CAN I SAY BUT ROOKIE MISTAKE FOR NOT NOTICING THAT.........

AGAIN I APOLOGISE TO YOU ALL FOR ASKING SO MANY IN DEPTH QUESTIONS.WHEN IT WAS SUCH A SIMPLE MISTAKE.BUT HEY ATLEAST I LEARNED ALOT ABOUT THE DISTRIBUTOR.HOW TO CHECK EACH COMPONET INDIVIDUALLY AND HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER.HOW TO BENCH TEST IT HOW TO GET IT SET TDC.HOW TO GET COMPRESSION ON NUMBER ONE HOW TO ADJUST THE OIL PUMP SO ROTOR POINTED AT NUMBER ONE PLUG.THAT LIL BUSHING MISHAP COST ME ALMOST TO WEEKS OF DRIVING.BUT WHAT I LEARNED IS PRICLESS AND NOW I LOVE YHE GREY GOOSE THAT MCH MORE...SO WASNT ALL BAD....SOME DAY I WILL KNOW THIS TRUCK INSIDE OUT.AND I HOPE I CAN OFFER UP GREAT ADVICE TO SOME NEWBIE LIKE ALL OF YOU DID.WORKING ON YOUR OWN VEHICHLE USED TO BE THE NORM.NOW ITS A DYING ART.THANKS AGAIN TO ALL OF YOU FOR KEEPING THAT ALIVE....AND NOW PLEASE FEEL FREE TO LAUGJ AND POINT AT ME HAHAHA I DESERVE IT....

No one's laughing AT you, Brother.
Laughing *with you* is the way it works.

I, along with all the others, am very happy you are:

1) Running;

2) Dug in to get the problem fixed until it WAS fixed;

-and-

3) Had the opportunity to turn off the caps.
The ones on the keyboard, not the dizzy.

Kidding.
