the only thing in alabama that is cheap is for vintage vehicles, a permanent vintage license plate is a one time fee of $16.00 for the life of the vehicle and no titles are issued on 1974 and older vehicles.you need only a bill of sale.

I got a ticket for no seat belt in California 2 years ago, it was $450.00, I wrote a note on it and told them the fine was $25.00 in Oklahoma and that I would not pay them $ 450.00 that it was robbery, they sent me a bill for $ 750.00 I will never pay them anything.........Kieth

Not truck related: It sometimes depends on what County you live in to how much get gouged. My wife and I had to get life scan fingerprinting so we could take in a foster child. My wife's cousin also did the same so they could take in the sister of our foster son. It cost them $10 each in Stanislaus County but it cost us $150 each in Contra Costa County. Go figure.

Back to subject: I didn't here that Jerry B raised the fees. Last I heard he was ticked because he couldn't get the continuation of the old higher fees on the ballot in time so the fees would go down. I guess he found a way around that.

...they're all crooked....but yes, it does depend alot on the county you live in. I'm going to get a p.o. box in the county I work in since the county I live in is pretty expensive.

Don't get pulled over again in Ca if you come back to visit. If they run your info on that and see you haven't paid you could likely spend at least a weekend in jail. These jack-holes are serious about "their" money. A buddy of mine spent a weekend in lockup over @$300...... so stupid.

so true! when i was in court they brought an inmate in all shackled up and they ran him before everyone. he had been in for close to 2 weeks. when they said his crimes i was like wtf, judge said the same too. he had gotten 2 tickets for riding a bicycle at nite with no headlight. judge was like mm ok you've paid your due...

When I brought my 65 to California from Texas summer of 2000, I went to the DMV, and they made me go get it weighed.

Get this, they did not recommend a place, but told me I had to find it myself, and it had to be a certified place.

Found one, it was 10 or 15 bucks, 3650 lbs.

Then, when I tried again, they were looking for the vin plate, I had to show the lady.

I think it was 117.00 or so, if I would have known it was going to be "Commercial" I would have kept it registered in Texas!

I just registered the 65 here in AZ with expired CA plates from 2005, at a private DMV, pay a little more, no wait.

Get this, I did'nt even have bring the truck there, I was getting the tags for the Vette because I waited too long, I asked while I was there and had the title for the 65, she said we can do that.

Gave me plates and tags for it, 25.00 bucks.

By the way, I tried to register the 65 here in AZ twice in 2005, both times they inspected the vin tag (at the state run DMV) and both times, after doing that and going inside to the next line.

"Oh, our computer is down, and we can not register anything older than 1981"

I will go to the private run DMV from now on, a few more bucks is worth saving 3 hours!

I have a '78 truck here in CA...I didn't pay much attention when I paid for my plates...but just by coincidence I happened to have the registration next to my beater daily driver '99 mazda protege, and the protege was $75 a year, and my '78 truck was 110...i was like WTF....then i noticed it says "COMMERCIAL" on my registration...i thought the same thing...how the hell is an occasional mattress set or BBQ grille in the back of my truck "commercial" most of the time the bed is empty except for my lunch box or some dirty gloves or something...Oh well 73F today and sunny

Check your title under vehicle weight. When I first brought mine from Nevada to California the DMV charged me based on the manufacturers estimated weight, something close to 5500 pounds. Because it was new in California, DMV required that I take it to a weigh station to get the weight official. When I did that the truck only weighed a few pounds over 4000, and DMV refunded me about $70. Because all open bed pickup trucks are required to register as commercial vehicles, fees are largely based on vehicle weight. Take it out, have it weighed, and look at that slip based on what the DMV says it weighs. If it is different significantly, you might be able to take your new certification in and have the fees lowered.

The number you are referencing is the GVWR, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - not the vehicle weight (GVWR is vehicle empty weight + its max rated hauling capacity sorta). lol one thing i cant stand is getting crap from them..
as if they have it hard. i have to lose money just get something done at the dmv.

I don't know about the 3/4 ton. Mine was 168. 7200 gvw got me I think. I spend way too much on cal DMV fees. 428 for my wifes car. 375 for my F250. 168 for the GMC 148 for the focus 125 for the escape and the only break is 68 for the squareback. Oh, 230 for the travel trailer. I heard that they were talking about raising the DMV fees another 30% over the next two years again. And don't even get started on insurance!!!!

Weight fees in AZ are charged using registration info. You can't negotiate with them about it here.

I am happy to be an escaped prisoner from The Demokratik Republica De Kalifornia Soud, 7-1/2 years now.

In Nevada, we have the same insurance types the rest of the nation has, and one some don't, we have two comp0anies that will insure the OWNER of the vehicles, and NOT the vehicle itself. When the person is the insured, he/she can add any vehicle they wish that belongs to them, car, light truck, motorcycle, and is paid off, and, the usual no tickets/accidents in the last 6 years, onto the policy, and NOT have to separately insure the vehicle. I have my Buick Park Avenue, GMC safari van, S10 and Nissan Sentra fully covered with my policy, total YEARLY premium is half what insuring ONE vehicle is.

Here, this type policy is called an "Operator's Policy", because it insures the operator, not the vehicle itself. The premise is, one person cannot drive more than one vehicle at a time, so, insure the operator.

The only catch is, they have a weight limit of 9,999 pounds maximum for this type of coverage. My 1964 C30 1 ton dually won't get onto this insurance. I have to insure the vehicle for it.

I went searching for "collector vehicle insurance", as we see advertised on the Sunday car shows, and came up with these facts, this truck can be insured, for Nevada minimum coverage, as a collector vehicle in progress of restoration, with full operating privileges for Nevada, limited to 18,000 miles per year, for a yearly premium of $89.00. And, it retains its full commercial rating and 10,000 lb rating as well, so, I can do just about any hauling I would have with the more expensive coverage. Now, I am not going to use this truck for long trips, just back and forth to town and some other small travel, well under the mileage of the policy, so, that is a bonus for me.

Nevada minimum coverage for the 1 ton would have been about $500.00 per year with a regular policy. On all my 4 wheeled vehicles this year, I have put less than 13,500 miles of travel.
