Re: Irish's 1966 LWB Fleetside
Wow you don't mess around...nice progress. Welding sheet metal takes some practice. You don't want to try and make a long weld as you would on thicker material. On sheet metal you want to make a series of tacks, skipping around so not to build up too much heat. Sometimes you might need to just go do something else until it cools to the touch. When you do end up with a gap, start your tacks at the end of the gap, and then work off of your last tack since that will absorb a lot of the heat from the next tack. If you can get a hold of a heavy piece of either copper or brass, you can use that for a backup behind a gap or small hole you want to fill. The weld won't stick to copper or brass.

Re: Irish's 1966 LWB Fleetside
Great tips Captain. I'm planning on putting the cab on to the frame this weekend so it will be more solid when I do the rockers and floor patches.

Re: Irish's 1966 LWB Fleetside
No work on the truck this evening, but I did run by Harbor Freight on the way home. Picked up some bits for welding. And thx to Captainfab, I noticed they were selling a copper spoon. Just for the same reason he mentioned above. The welds won't stick to the copper but if u put it behind a hole, it will support your weld. Can't wait to give it a shot. Picked up another cut off tool for $6. Lol. And more JB Weld. I plan on filling my bed trim holes with that the weekend. There's a good article in this months Hot 3
Rod mag about welding in floor pans. Good step by step, with pictures.

Yep Guinness is my LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time favorite, and my visit to your home country (and the Guinness Storehouse) was like a dream come true. I'll keep an eye out for the Boddingtons next time I'm in an area I can get specialized brews like that, my little redneck town doesn't have much in selection (I'm actually surprised I can get Guinness here). |

Another local here. Nice progress David. I've enjoyed the darker stuff for many years. IPA's have been my brew of choice lately. So many to choose from around here. Been to the Guinness brewery too. 12hr shifts in Hillsboro? hmmmmm ...sounds like Intel to me. No?

Re: Irish's 1966 LWB Fleetside
OK, kind of a weird bout of weather we are having here in the NW. Sun one second and torrential rain the next, but I got some stuff done. I had planned on getting the cab on to the frame the weekend, but I opted for getting the motor and tranny in so I could start setting up the truck for it's exhaust. I got the exhaust maifolds on and bolted up with new gaskets and a fresh coat of high temp black. A quick tip from my buddy....heat the manifold up with a torch, spray it with a coat, then reheat it it with the torch, while it's wet and repeat. This actually bonds the paint to the surface. Worked out pretty nice. Anyways, see below:

Re: Irish's 1966 LWB Fleetside
I also put on new motor mounts and painted up the brackets, the same colour as the motor. I was siezing the good weather and had to clean out the garage, so I could get the frame back inside when I had the motor on it.....

Re: Irish's 1966 LWB Fleetside
I spent alot of time cleaning and on some small stuff. I got a power steering setup from the Pick N Pull, and I got stuck into that and a can of safety solvent. Looks alot better now, than it did, but I will paint it next weekend. Hopefully the weather gets better. Here is a pic of it before, I got really into cleaning it, and some other pics. The last one is of my buddy's camaro. Not a bad lookin car.

Re: Irish's 1966 LWB Fleetside
It's hard to say. I'm getting short on the green stuff, but I'd love to have it done to the point of driving. I will work all day on night on it, but tools/parts and supplies slow it down.
