Re: Hubcaps

How am I missing that these are not 61-63 caps? I thought we said that the Chevy emblem came in different colors? Did they not come in aluminum? Also I dont see any black trim in these like the 69-74 above. I am including a pic that I thought was correct for this which is 61-63 and also an examples of 64-66 which is what I thought it should be. I may be wrong and welcome corrections.
Thanks,
AJ

The caps in the left pic with the whitewalls are 61-63, the right pic is the 64-66 caps. The caps that we are talking about above with the black ring on the cap are 69-mid 70's caps. I dont know if they ever came in aluminum....my 63 caps are I believe stainless steel that has been chrome plated. I hav eonly seen the 61-63 caps with the red bowties, there may be others, but the only factory color I have seen. The 69-early 70's caps I have found the bowties in several colors.

Re: Hubcaps

Thanks 1963-c10,
So based on that what would we call perro13's truck from post 46? It does not have the black trim like the later models?

Re: Hubcaps

Post 46 - The black has been removed and he said that he painted the bowtie red. I dont know what his caps are made from, they may be aluminum. Im not real familiar with the caps from those years. I had 63 c-10 in 1996 that had them on the truck and they were painted solid white (repainted by someone else). I sold them for like $40 and put the money to the correct caps. I dont remember what they were made of, but I dont believe they were aluminum. Perro13's might be able to tell you.

Hey Randy,
I know that you painted the bowties but did you also remove the black paint?

Re: Hubcaps

Something I haven't seen discussed about hubcaps is when locking hubs first became available from the factory. What is the earliest known hubcap with a hole cut for a front hub?

In this thread there is a picture of a deep hubcap that may completely cover the front hub without lockouts, or is this for a 3/4 ton with full floating hubs? The early 60's hubs appear longer than later ones, and I doubt a hubcap was ever made to completely cover this hub. When did they shorten the hubs?

Re: Hubcaps

stupid question maybe, but i have a set of 15" painted smoothies. Do you think i can screw on some clips on the centers and be able to use some '60-'61 caps? i just have always loved those and i cant seem to score any '62-'63 caps. I've seen them on ebay a couple times, but was out-bid both times. And I can just purchase the '60-'61 caps from the Truck Shop in Orange, CA. Any info on that? Thanks
- Santos

Re: Hubcaps

Are you running stock steel rims? You can purchase the clips and install them on the rims. Classic parts of America has them in stock.

Re: Hubcaps

The one on the left is the 57-60 chevy and the one on the right is the 55-59 GMC. Both are clipped caps.

Re: Hubcaps

Hmmmm I had been wanting to go with 15x8 steelies and the correct 66 caps. Looking at your pic above, I love those 57-60 caps. I actually have a pair of 15x8 "clip type" steelies that I picked up off of craigslist. Perhaps I'll hunt down another pair and go that route. Thanks for the idea!

Re: Hubcaps

Another thing, a 16" cap for a clip style wheel can be converted to a 15" nub style wheel by removing the inner ring.

16" cap? The important thing is lug count and clips or not. Here is a 6 lug clip style wheel that accepts the strange 7 5/8" back opening cap. This is a 15" wheel but I do know the year of this rim, it may be late 50's or 1960?.Most mid 60's 6 lug rim with clips were 3 piece rims. This cap is not to be confused with the larger 8 3/4" back opening for 8 lug clip rims.

Re: Hubcaps

I stand corrected! My apologies!

16" with 6 clips 6 stud ( Older style? )

16" with 3 clips 6 stud ( newer style? ) I widened these of course. These came off my 62 K10

15" with clips I've never had one to confirm that they shared the same cap.

Re: Hubcaps

Here are some pics of the 4x4 hubcaps that we were talking about a few months ago. You can tell this one was not cut out due to the size of the hole only being big enough to firt over the hub. There was never a bowtie on the 4x4 cap. I had some closer pics of a set of them, I will see if I can find it.
