Re: 72 Plaid Sub

OK, So the way I purchased the 6.2L Engine, it was a short block with rotating assembly and heads. so there was no way of knowing if it was a truck or Car Engine. (it does not appear to have ever had a Vacuum pump mounted to the block so it was possibly a Camaro engine)

There was not balancer or water pump on the front of the engine.

Currently it has a truck balancer and the Holley accessory drive system on it, as that is what was available at the time I started fitting the engine to the truck.

I have talked Zach At drive junkies and know I will need to change to a Camaro water pump and balancer.

Re: 72 Plaid Sub

Here's some pics from the Gitdown, the hotel, and Goodguys Southwest 2017. My brothers 66 Chevy next to the suburban was our grandfathers truck. It had been about 30 years since I rode in that truck. Such a cool weekend.

Re: 72 Plaid Sub

In early 2018 I decided the burb needed to be a full blown show vehicle. So, I blew it all apart again and had the body blasted to bare metal.

Funny after having a full blown show paint job I'm going the other way, with my suburban build. We always want what we don't have right....What colors you have in mind?

Do you have any pictures of the interior? Where you able to get a 3rd row seat back there?

If you look close in post #55 you can see the 3rd row facing the rear lift gate.

This is pretty cool too...

LockDoc
Thanks LockDoc. If the paint was original I would have left it. It was a repaint about 20 years ago and I just wanted it to look better.

Going back with the same blue and white, but looking for a nice metallic blue now.

Good eye ajgriffin. The 3rd seat will be facing the rear.

Doing some rust repair. Drivers side was shot, but the passenger side rockers were solid. Got lucky.

Bret, just checking in on you and the project. I've taken a break on Instagram, but last I was on there you thought you were close to paint. How are things coming?

Going good over here, just not as much progress as I would like. I had some family heath issues that took a lot of my time early this year, and then I decided to replace some more sheet metal on the burb that I wasn't happy with. I'm real close paint now. I should start painting the interior within the next 2-3 weeks.

Good to hear 👍🏾 I don't know anyone who makes as much progress as they want to on their projects, so any progress at all is good progress. Also glad to hear that you were able to work through the health issues. Hope the worst of that is behind you.

Re: 72 Plaid Sub

One question for you. How is the fit of your passenger doors? I was installing weatherstrip on mine and noticed that although the body of the door is decent, the window area is terrible.

Yes, the worst is definitely behind me. As for the door window frames, I put a lot of work into the 3rd door to make it look right. The gaps were bad and I had to cut it loose from the door and re-weld it. It was also pushed out similar to yours in the picture.

The weather strip attaches to a pinch weld in the door jamb. I smacked that pinch weld in a little with a dead blow hammer so it wasn't pushing out so hard on the window frame, then reinstalled the weather strip and checked the fit until it looked right. Had to do the same in several places on the other doors as well. Those window frames will bend a little, but I'm sure its much less stressful bending them in the body work stage than when they're painted.

Hope this helps.

Re: 72 Plaid Sub

Got some Trique Mfg. Altman Easy Latches for the doors. Decided to cut them apart and weld them flush instead of bolting them in.

Discovered something weird about suburbans during this process. The suburban passenger door striker plate is different than the truck. As you can see in the picture, the bolt holes don't line up and the inside edge of the plate had to be ground down to fit.

NICE! Altman has been working on a Suburban set for a while, but I'm not holding my breath. How did the 3 door close once you finished the mod?

Doors close much easier. I mocked everything up and did all bodywork with the door seals in place. I just figured I would sacrifice a set of seals through the build, so I didn't have to worry about the doors being so tight in the end.
