Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Little update, found a sweet deal on the local craigslist. Possibly a donor truck? Possibly a daily driver? I am dying to drive one of these things so I might just slam it and drive it but here it is. 71 Cheyenne, second owner, 350 small block, ac cab, kinda plain as far as tilt, tach, and buckets go. Going to check it out friday, hopefully driving it home. Guy says the body is solid (cab corners and rockers) only issue is the tailgate has a dent in it. It kinda looks like the bed is a different color but idk. Still looks like a great deal to me

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe change out some marker lights and a seat cover and have a pretty solid daily driver. I'm going to check it out tomorrow, I'll keep you informed

Yea, I'm personally a fan of short beds but it is still a very clean truck. I have a short bet fleet side wood floor bed that is completely rust free out in CA at my grandpas house that I can eventually throw on a frame with the cab. Maybe this summer if I get a little ambitious, I will throw some of my parts for my other build in the truck. It's out 150 past granite quarry but before asheboro, about 45 miles from my house....... It better not be gone when I get there, hahaha

Haha, I know. And it took us forever to find that bed. We found it at a wrecking yard in California for 350 bucks for the entire truck. It looked like the bed was replaced about halfway through the life of the truck because the rest of the truck was junk. We just chopped the frame and made a trailer out of it so it is easy to move around. The only wood floor beds that I see are ones that people converted.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Got some more parts in the mail for my build. Stupid Truck Shop out of CA sent me the wrong grill. Other then that, I am happy with all of the parts.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Quick question, does anyone know what this fits? I found it at my grandpas wrecking yard and I wasn't sure if it was for like a dump truck or something different. I figured there may be a sun visor expert out there somewhere

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

The sunvisor looks like the ones I have including the engine starting instructions...

That grille is worth a couple hundred more than a basic aluminum outer grille....I personally like the chrome oute....but take the billet inner out and sell it and put a factory inner in it. Then the grille can match the bumper

We went to check it out tonight and it wasn't what we thought it was. There was a good bit of rust and mud that we didn't really want to mess with. There was a huge section under the drivers side of the cab where the support structure for the cab was rotted out. It would make a great project truck. All of the parts are there, original 350 motor, even all 4 hubcaps are still on it. Just not what we were lookin for. I'm thinkin you can get the truck for 2000 if anyone is interested

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Haven't been on in a few days, here is a little update. Got most of the welding and grinding done on the c notch. Finishing the rest up tomorrow and taking the frame, inner fenders, core support, and a few other small things to the powder coater saturday morning. I will have pictures up as soon as I get everything back

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Ok so I know I keep saying the frame is gonna go to the powder coat but today we had the trailer loaded up and ready to go drop it off but my dad's truck broke down about two minutes down the road
So we had to drive back to the shop and drop off the trailer and the truck is at the dealer getting fixed. So I have no clue when the frame is going to be done.
Here are some pictures of my dad's projects and my welding skills in progress.
1968 z28 camaro (bought before I was born), 69 z28 rs (my dad's baby), 70 z28 rs (grandparents bought new), and awesome bead on my frame

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Haven't been on here in a while but I have been working on the truck a little. Here is an update of my progress. I finally got the frame, inner fenders, and core support back from the powder coater. I am super pleased with the way everything turned out. One of the rods for my lowers was bad so I had to get a new one and I have to run it back up to the coater along with some other small stuff before I can put the front suspension back together. I got my crossmember bolted in, new truck arms bolted it, mocked up the new rearend housing, and I am working on making new brackets for the bags in the back. The bed is at the body shop and they are doing all of the body work and putting it in primer for me. I went over there and grinded on some mud today. The bed should be done by the end of the month, then I am gonna give them the cab. I have a picture of the frame on my phone so it isn't very high quality but I will get some pictures here shortly.

A few more pictures of the powdercoat, the mock rear end, new truck arms, and my dash bezel that I finally put on the cluster. I put the old bezel in the truck for a little motivation

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

And finally, today I worked on mounting the rear bags. The original mounting system was two steps that added about four inches to the bag. So I drilled a hole in the bottom plate, ran a tap through it, and the hole bag screws directly onto the mount on the truck arm. Then the top will bolt directly to the bottom of the frame rail. Pretty pleased with how it turned out. I should have pictures of the finished product in the next day or so.

Thanks, once we put a gear in it we might have to shave part of the crossmember which kinda sucks cause everything just got powder coated. I might just leave it for now tho and see how low the back is once everything is together.

Thanks!! Yea I was kinda hoping to be able to drive it before I finished high school but oh well. I wanted to take my time and do it right. But now I am leaving for college in a couple months and I am not gonna have any time to work on it so I am trying to get as much done as I can. I was kinda hoping to leave a bad a$$ burnout in the school parking lot last day with this old girl but oh well. Maybe I'll go back and do it once she is finished
