Re: Strangest engine swap?

I've seen a Cat engine in my old hometown. Never got a look at it up close, could just be like a big Cummins engine.

Re: Strangest engine swap?

I recall seeing a pic of guy who appeared to have mounted a radial aircraft engine in one....I think....and although I don't know if it was functional.... it looked very cool.

Re: Strangest engine swap?

I've seen 348s and 409s although not a strange swap it's kind of out of the box. I've always loved how those old bigblocks looked personally.

It's not one that I've seen, but I'd kinda like to swap out the 292 for a 2JZ from a Supra...

That simply has to be one of, if not the coolest engine swap I've seen.
Very classic and importantly....not very common (hence the unique/cool factor).

What is the 348 like for power and torque?...say compared to a 350?

All Good

Hi Coley, it's 280 HP at 4800 RPM, torque is 355 at 3200 RPM. 9.5/1 compression. STROKE IS 3.25, BORE IS 4.125, this is with the 3-2 bbls. I have it bored 30 over and a little more cam than stock specs so maybe closer to 300 HP. I've never pushed it passed 3500 RPM though, since it's just a daily driver and for looks. It's no racer by any means, it's all they had back in the late 50s early 60s before they came out with the real bbc. But I like to be different. LOL

...well that would undoubtedly outpace my fairly stock 350 I'm sure.
Regardless, there is always only so much power you can safely put down under most circumstances but I'm quite sure it has the ability to hustle off the line.
...and I definitely like the 'different' factor in that.

I think one of my favorite swaps would be to a 472 or 500 c.i Cadillac (in lieu of a 409) but with a 4 speed (newer series) automatic behind it....although that is currently not in this years budget forecast...lol.

All good
Coley

I used to run those 348s pretty hard, back in the day (I used to work for some Chevy dealers then), but I can understand keeping the revs down so that it doesn't break. That is one COOL looking setup! One dealership I worked at had a '32 Chevy coupe as a trade in that had 6 Stromberg 97s on it. Pretty damn cool, too.

A Jag six! That's funny. When my Dad had a '59 Mark IX saloon, all I heard was "you should put an SBC in it."

Re: Strangest engine swap?

Not too weird, but I know of one truck with a Buick engine, and another case where a guy is looking to put a Buick engine in his truck, too. Given the cost of building Buick Vs Chevy (at least double, just for stock), I went the other way and put a Chevy engine in my Buick. I've since sold it, not long after I went back to Buick power for cheap- bought a car with a rebuilt engine and parted the rest out for a profit. Now the only old vehicle I have is the truck, and that's enough of a money pit. I don't need two pits.

Re: Strangest engine swap?

When I bought my Burb it had a 478 ci V6 GMC Toroflow diesel from a 2 1/2 ton truck. Definitely a little odd, but it ran well until I swapped a Cummins in it.

Seen that one done a few times, a Toro-Flow has the same bell housing bolt pattern and motor mount location as the GMC V-6, so it's almost a bolt-in.

Read a story about a guy back in the day that had a new '67 GMC 2500 with a dealer-swap 478 Toro-Flow in it.

My wife's grandfather burned up the six in his '69. He had a wrecked Studebaker with a V8 that was running when the accident happened out in the barn. Since he had a welding torch and some angle iron laying around, why not? I wish I had pictures.
