Re: project "C10 Fever" (68 factory black 396 swb)

well she's back on the ground. when i first bolted on the wheels i discovered the spindles were hitting the wheels. i've heard a lot of stories of control arms rubbing, but i haven't heard that about the spindles before. i bought some 5/16" spacers and trimed about an 1/8" off the spindles and it's all good. what do you think? it seems a tad low to me, but i think i just need to get used to it.

Re: project "C10 Fever" (68 factory black 396 swb)

pulled the beast out today for some much needed shop cleaning. i'm not positive but i think i may be a bit too low in the front. it looks like if i turn going through any kind of dip the tires might rub the inner fender. the front drop is supposed to be around 4". it's a 2.5" spindle, and factory springs cut to the same length as a pair of front springs i was told was straight from the ECE 4/6 kit, which should have been 1.5" (i think). it's possible they are cut more than i thought, or they are a bit worn out. they looked really nice, but you never know. i was going for a 4/5, but i think i have more like a 5.5 front 5 rear...

thanks brother. i've checked out your build too, i think we've got the exact wheel/tire setup. yeah i'm getting really impatient about the 396 sitting on the stand. i've got a "nasty" cam picked out, can't wait for that phase.

I'd drive it some to see the front end works. I'm not a fan of much lowering, yours looks just about right! If it has a small block in it now, that front end WILL be lower with the big six (396...)
Where did you get those hubcaps?

before i had a chance to drive it i pulled the front springs and installed new factory height big block springs. going back to 3" springs in the rear. so once i get the big six in there it should be a 2.5/3. i usually like the look of the 4/6 drop, but seeing it on my truck just looks like my truck is broken. i am hoping for more of a muscle car look. hopefully i get it this time.

i got the caps in a trade.

Good point and something to think about if it's in the near future.

I think the front is perfect if it doesn't rub, back is still an inch too high. Although if it came up an inch in the front is might look perfect as well.

they are 68 only and are not reproduced. they are VERY hard to find in stainless.

i appreciate the input, and i tend to agree with you. i'm extremely fickle about these things so who knows where it will end up.

Re: project "C10 Fever" (68 factory black 396 swb)

so i wrapped up my other project (vitamin c) so i'm getting back onto the 68.

finished installing the brake lines. welded on some brackets and bolted on new tabs since the 71-72 parts connect on the front of the crossmember. installed the sway bar and shocks.

now i have to figure out this stance... the front was too low (see post 54). so i pulled the cut oem springs out and installed new bbc stock height front springs for a starting point (next step is installing the 396). i am liking the 5" drop in the rear, now i need to figure out how much front spring to cut. i'm thinking after i install the 396 and cut 1/2 to 3/4 of a coil i'll have a very slight rake, which would be perfect. until i change my mind again...

Re: project "C10 Fever" (68 factory black 396 swb)

stole a photo from chewychevy67's build thread and tweaked it to represent what my truck would have looked like from the factory. i will definitely be going with black paint with a white grille and white tailgate letters and full trim. still undecided on the white roof, but it sure looks classy! i'm not doing any mods to this truck that can't easily be reversed so some day when i'm old and grumpy i can do a factory resto...

Re: project "C10 Fever" (68 factory black 396 swb)

alright so i finally have the stance i've been looking for. i had to cut a coil off the new bbc springs. the bottom coil i removed was 1", and the drop was just under 2", just as i had hoped (17"/9" control arm ratio). once i get the 396 in i think it will drop another 1/4" to 1/2" which will be perfect.

Nice stance. What is your total drop front/rear?

5" springs out back. 2.5" spindle plus one cut coil that dropped the front end 2". but it's a sbc sitting on bbc springs. so i'd say it's the equivalent of a 4/5 drop.
