Re: My build so far

Well Greg, I already gave the other cab to my cousin and he has it already at his house. Yeah the '68 cab is a better cab. But I wanted a true '72 so I kept the '72 for me.

Now it's comming back to me. I forgot about your cousin getting the long wheel base truck. Please over look my previous statements. Old age is getting to me. We come up last weekend and spent the whole time with Dad and watching football. Next time I will do my best to give you a call and ride out and see your progress.

Re: My build so far

The truck is still in dad's garage, we haven't worked on it for about 2 weeks now. He was sick, then he got well, then he had a siding job, now I been sick this week. Maybe we can get out there this weekend some.

Re: My build so far

I picked up a 4.8 engine for my son's '68 project today. even if we decide to go a different route I couldn't pass up a LS engine for $75.00. Right now his truck is sitting on a '72 swb frame, thanks to Jeff(trucknut). I took the cab off of a lwb 68 truck and got the front end from Jeff. The bed will have to wait until later.

No doubt....can't go wrong for that price. What all parts are interchangeable with the 5.3 or 6.0?

I don't know alot about the ls engines besides having a 5.3 in my wife's Tahoe. By the little bit of reading I've done the bore is the same between 4.8 and 5.3, it is the stroke that is different. I don't know anything about the 6.0 except it can make a lot horsepower and poor fuel mileage.

Re: My build so far

Greg, where did you luck up and find that 4.8 for 75 bills? I knew where I could have gotten a 5.3 w/36,000 miles awhile back for $700.00. I would like to go that route, but I would like to go carb instead of EFI.

Hey Jeff how's it going. I found the engine on craig's list. The guy lives in the same town and delivered to me at work. I figured I couldn't beat that kinda of deal.

Sounds like a plan. I'm pretty sure you will do yours first. The engine is for my son, which is seven right now. We got ten years to get his truck going. By that time who know what kinda of powertrain will be out. I told him we are going to finish my '65 first. It has a 406/700r4 combo in it now but if the right deal comes along it also might have a ls engine. The 406 has a 520 lift cam and the older I get the more I want something practical instead of the go fast.

I found some old pictures of when I disassembled the truck. These are before digital camaras some the quality is poor. The last one is from the Move to Georgia.

Re: My build so far

Ok I got my cab back earlier this week after having the floor sheet metal replaced. Their is still alot of body work to be done but I could not resist putting the cab on the frame to see how it looks. It has been eight years since I tore it apart and almost forgot what it looks like. Here are a few pictures of the floor pan after replacement.

Re: Greg65 build thread

We went and ticked up this little "jewel" this weekend. Between the two 1968 trucks Evan should have a good start on his truck. This means I have about seven years to finish mine.

Re: Greg65 build thread

After thinking long and hard I decided to part out the above 68 awb. We kept the front sheet metal and bed for Evan's truck and sold the rest. This morning I delivered the frame to Chris(georgiachevydriver) and had an well deserved road trip. It's always good to get away from home for awhile. My old Silverado never missed a beat on the 400 mile trip. There is nothing quite like seeing the sun rise over the Summit racing building. Anyway had a good trip a extra cash to buy more truck parts. Life is good.

Sounds like fun. I love road trips. Did you go into Summit or do a drive by? Thanks for sending 95light my way. He picked up the frame.

Re: Greg65 build thread

My truck kept pulling to the right at the Summit exit. It was all I could to stay on I-75 north. No problem with the frame, glad i could help to forum members.

Re: Greg65 build thread

Greg, the 65 is looking good.. I'm glad you posted some old pics of it, I didn't realize it's been apart for 8 yrs. I'm glad it's going back together. If you do go LS, I know where someone might be interested in the 406..LOL.

Re: Greg65 build thread

The LS swap is still a thought I can't get rid of but I know I would miss hearing that big cam in the 406. I need to sit down and decide if it's going to be a redlight to redlight truck or built to be driven long distances. Is old age catching up to me?

Re: Greg65 build thread

Last night I started on making a bracket for my electric fuel pump and fuel filter. Started with a 16 guage of sheet metal. After marking out my pattern, I cut it out. I even notched out the mounting tabs. Then I installed the pump, filter, and the line between the two. After disassembling everything and painting bracket I made sure everything fit. It was to be installed in front of the crossmember above the rear axle. The only problem is the first bump I hit the rear trailing arm will ko the fuel pump. Oh well at least I thought I was making progress. The reason for moving the pump was so later I can run my exhaut over the axle.

Looks like the build is coming along good. How's that puppy. Your never to old to do a good burn out, just ask Strodder. He's really old.
