Re: Rarest Paint Color?

As usual, Special K has it right. The " special paint" from the factory would be the rarest, and the one year only during the series era would be next. Any repaint color not from the factory is "someones personal taste" and would not have historical significance.

Re: Rarest Paint Color?

I got parts out of a GMC that is Turqoise Poly with a teal colored interior and decided to paint mine that same color. It's the only one I've seen.

Also there was a really bright yellow that is rare.

Re: Rarest Paint Color?

Mine is a factory dark gold, I have seen a lot of the light gold, and the copper gold trucks, but I have not seen any other dark gold. I have been debating on wheather to keep the factory color or not. i had it painted once in 1992 and kept it factory, I like the rareity of it, but I like these trucks in brighter colors as well. I was thinking of maby doing the 71 theam of white top, and white between the upper and lower trim, and the rest the factory dark gold. maby with some pearl in the clear over the white so it has some sparkle to match the metalic in the gold?

Re: Rarest Paint Color?

Although I like the color of all the trucks that ive seen in the past....I have always liked a Gunmetal color like some high quality carbon fibre.

Re: Rarest Paint Color?

I've never seen that Ice Pearl color in real life and thought the one's I had seen on here had to be custom color repaints.

Haven't seen too many of the original color mine was.

LOL. Thanks. Could have been. We lived over near Hulen but that was almost 20 years ago. It was my daily driver back then. I worked at Super Shops in River Oaks at the time. If it was more recent than that it was probably another dark yellow truck. I haven't really driver this truck much in the last 10 years. We moved to North East Dallas 15 years ago.

Re: Rarest Paint Color?

I don`t think you understood my point on being more specific about your search. We can dream up all kinds of colors we`ve never seen or seen once. Then, there`s shades of each color.I`m not trying to be ridiculous.I think its because you used the word "rarest",which narrows it down to a single color, that got me thinking the search has to have some bounds. If you asked,"What are some rare colrs",then we wouldn`t need to limit it.There are factory pack colors and custom mixes. You need a basis to rate on or what`s the point? You could say "Baby Blue" and there was a light blue in the first few years from the factory, but it wasn`t called baby blue by GM and there could be a thousand shades of just Baby Blue and some will call it Sky Blue.As I said, even the factory had a list of colors offered each year, some only one year, some every year, some only GMC or Chevy, and some on both but more years on one brand then the others.Obviously a one year/one brand standard color would be rarest. But,a special paint would be even more rare.A non-factory color could be one of a kind.

I can think of alot of factory 67-72 colors that i`ve seen alot less,if ever, than Grapefruit. Then, there was a Pale Yellow in the earlier end that isn`t called Grapefruit but is only a shade different. You see Grapefruit (late color) more than the earlier version.Clean67 has that color on his`67 CST/20 CustomCamper.Palamino Tan on GMCs was a carry-over from the earlier years.Like Paul said, that`s a rare one.The `67 GMC project I`m building started with a Palamino Tan clip from Nebraska that I bought. It had perfect Custom badges and I bet that truck would have been a rarer bird than most. The Special Paint color I mentioned,Light Grey,I`ve only seen on the truck I had.Add the factory Red whaeels and you`ve narrowed it down even more. But,if there were two ordered that way it would be less rare than a color I could go and have mixed today and put on a 67-72.Catch my drift? If you just want to know what is the rarest color of all possible colors, then there are alot of one-off colors and they would all be equally rare. So,the rarest color would be the one you never saw.

Here`s that Grey:

You might have seen another Light Grey truck, but without checking the SPID you won`t know if it`s a factory Light Grey or a repaint.

Here`s a Grapefruit Blazer I have:

This Green is a special paint used on a fleet of rental trucks. There were many painted this color, but it`s a rare color to see on anything but one of these. And,there are less and less surviving.A new repaint color could be mixed and shot today:

Here`s that Palamino Tan:

I`ve only seen this truck in this color:

Thanks OrangeCrush1970;
The wheels aren't real ralley's, they are widened 90's 8-lug steel wheels.
I like the looks of ralley's but for an 8-lug truck this was the closest I could get.

Re: Rarest Paint Color?

As others mentioned and as was possible when these trucks were being manufactured, special paint colors would be the most uncommon....depending on which entity did the ordering.

As for a rare color, I had to "tend to" a '68 El Camino SS396 that was painted USAF Blue, with a white top. I know there were 3 of them....one at D-M AFB, another in California (forget which base) and the one I had to take care of at Bien Hoa RVN. I have a B&W pic, but no color pic. I know this post is about our '67-72's and the El Camino is not officially part of that group of vehicles but I wanted to throw it in the fire....like a hand grenade.

Rarest Factory Paint Color? Doesn't matter what country or what year. But it would be nice to know those when posted. Thanks all.

Re: Rarest Paint Color?

There was a Red/White Coca-Cola version, but it probably was not available to the public, when it was new anyway. It was probably a COPO thing....would that have been a "fleet" listing? or just "special"?
I would think that some of them have gotten into public hands over the years?
