You can go with 4.5"/6" without a notch. Any lower in the rear and a notch becomes necessary...

Here mine 4/5 drop - 2.5" CPP drop spindles & 1 coil cut off, rear flip (using Specialtyretail 5" drop brackets) and using KYB Nitro Shocks. Running 255/45/18 & 275/40/18 tires.

I had 6" drop in back an notched it....but I didn't have too....if your not going to haul anything or tow anything you don't have to with 6" drop.

Re: Lowered 73-87 Short Beds

I have a flip in the rear, and the PO heated the coils in the front, any bump and its on the bump stops. I have a few questions.

how many inches does a flip get you? How are you guys achieving your 6"-7" drops in the rear.

and whats the best setup to get the 4.5" in the front?

I'm leaning towards a 4.5"/6" or a 5"/7"

Man I miss this truck!! I check craigslist everyday hoping the new owner has posted it so i can get the thing back from him!

For future reference for the guys that are wondering, the tire sizes at the time were 245/35/20 front and 295/35/20 rear. I regretted at the time not going with a 245/40/20 in the front and would advise anyone looking for a similar combo to go bigger than a 245/35 up front on these trucks.

I did a flip kit and shackles to get 7. I would recommend spindles and springs for the front.

I really dig your truck Jonboy..would you or Scoti be able to recall what spindle/spring combo and rear setup you used and the staggered tire sizes in front and rear? That thing sits perfect..exactly the stance I'm going for with my '82..

This is an oldy but I noticed a question asked & not answered. JIC someone was/is curious, when that pic was taken, that 74 had dropped spindles, 1-coil removed from the factory V8/sbc coils, & relocated upper shock mounts. The rear was a flip kit on the 8-leaf HD spring pack, Western Chassis c-notches, drop shackles, & relocated lower shock mounts w/2" shorter shocks. It also had a driveway fabbed AOL set-up w/Schrader valves.

Fronts were 15x6.5" Van Ralleys & 215/70-15 BFG's.
Rears were 15x8" Truck Ralleys & 255/70-15 BFG's.

Jonboy indicated it "rides really well". It did.... on smooth pavement. Not so much on the much more common asphalt patched roads. It definitely needed more suspension travel clearance as it bottomed out front & rear.

Re: Lowered 73-87 Short Beds

Mine is flipped rear, and like a 4" front drop. 20s with 255/40R20 and 295/40R20s now. I think my springs are weak because the rear flip really lowered it a lot. Lol

I like the stance and the AT's on a lowered truck at that height. Looks tough, nice stance too.

I feel your pain with the potholes, pretty sure you can disappear in them here in Maine. I threw caution to the wind and am going lower with mine in the front than it already is, and its pretty low as is... after some of the giant ridges I ran over in NJ, not much could be worse at least in the spring/summer/fall when I actually drive my truck. I never bottemed out anywhere, even on some really, really nasty country roads where I've actually accidentally lifted the front wheels of my 4runner driving on, except in NJ on my drive home.
