Planning to swap bumpers in the front so hit the nuts with pb blaster so they can soak. Took some stickers off the rear and discovered original shiny paint. If you wipe off the paint it buffs up nicely. Will power wash then see how it looks buffed out and may consider a satin clear over the paint.

Also found a nice nest in the hood latch area...

Finally, the part that made me happiest was when I took the laquer thinner to the orange and black paint the po put on the truck. Came right off with some elbow grease as expected. I may fix the crease or might just leave it for "character"

The picture of the light housing is cool. I had never heard of Peterson Mfg, so I looked it up. They are still in business and still have a Manufacturing Facility in Grandview (near Kansas City). http://www.pmlights.com/

Keep up the good work on the truck. It's going to be an neat rolling billboard. You should consider bringing it on Power Tour with us next Summer.

I was going to look it up...that's really cool they are still in business! These are definitely from a while ago because the plastic is brittle...

Thanks, I definitely am considering the power tour. Planning to get the sbc in and running but then sell that as soon as I find an LS for it and get it ready to install....I have people looking for me for LS engine/tranny (wrecked vehicle auctions) under 100K miles for 1000 and under....as soon as one pops up...it's mine

Power tour would be great advertising...I know more and more "car" guys who are getting into trucks instead of building another car...they realize they can actually use the truck and it's cheaper than buying a new truck...and if you consider one with an ls/ac/tilt and fully restored suspension can be a really nice driver for 1/2 the price of a new one (or a lot less) it's a no-brainer to most "car guys"

I like your current "tilt" bed a lot better...but I can see the cleaning advantage of the other way !

does anyone know an easy way getting a manual crossmember out w/out an air chisel??? Trying to figure that one out now...it's partially under the cab so I'm wondering if I am going to have to lift the cab up to get it removed....any ideas?

I had planned on picking up the cab moving it back 6 inches then going to work on the rivets to get my manual transmission crossmember out because there is really no viable way of doing it otherwise, and for you finding out what condition the cab mount seats are in is going to be necessary anyway.

As far as the rivets go I always cut a "plus sign" shape in the head of the rivet with a cutoff wheel and use a hand sledge and a heavy punch and "crush" the head of the rivet at an angle from all 4 sides to a diameter small enough to fit through the hole then I punch it from the top and it falls right through like butter and this method is by far the simplist and easiest without even scratching the frame.

Thanks, that's what I'm planning.....just was hoping someone had a "magic" way of doing it

I should do cab mounts anyways and I want to paint the underside with bedliner to protect it so I guess it's going to have to come up a little at least...looking into the one man cab lift so I can just use my hoist...

I planned to paint the frame anyways....I will be leaving the sheetmetal with its' "patina" and the rest of the truck (engine bay/interior/suspension) will work/look like new or better

Oh heck yeah rigging yourself up a cab lift is a must in my oppinion since you are going to be doing this for a living and will probably end up needing it 1,000 times over the course of your career.
I recommend the heavy duty Quad pressure point version that mounts at the windshield frame, rear window frame and both door frames so you get a solid stable lift without risk of bending anything.

Yep, looking at the lfd one man cab and bed lift and tip and flip dolly.

Thanks! It's looking a lot better imho now.....spent 1/2 hour with some laquer thinner and got almost all the orange and most of the black spray paint off. Only bits left are areas I will be cutting and patching.

Then sprayed and wiped down the exterior with lime away (basically thicker version of clr) and then power washed the exterior. The white paint I knew was thin as evidenced by the streaks on the back of the cab. Once I power washed it the roof patina looks even cooler. Have to get some good daylight pictures tomorrow.

After that I had to move some things to get my engine hoist out so I spent several hours organizing my garage....I need to have a swap meet/ parts sale at my house asap!

As of now it looks worse than before but once I'm finished it will be 1000% better....guys used to no room to walk will be shocked I think

Here are a couple pics of the truck wet earlier from rain and then after cleaning. Real payoff is down the road when I buff the paint but it's already looking much better...

Next was the engine....it's a remanufactured gm crate engine with around 2500 miles. The po didn't prep it properly for paint so it has flaked off in places...also the valve cover gaskets were junk so it was an oily mess. Tinkermc (john) stopped by today and mentioned gunk which I happened to have. Put the engine on the hoist and sprayed it heavy with gunk, let it sit for a bit then washed it off with the power washer. Will scrape it to make sure there isn't any more loose paint then mask, prime, paint, and clear it.

Also a picture of the "junk" in the interior...a good set of window regulators, hood hinges, armrests, and sill plates ready to go on soon...

Wow what a great find a used crate motor with 2,500 miles on it, you can't get a used engine with much lower mileage than that, I'm envious and hoping to find something like that for myself in the spring.

I think that lip spoiler may be a little too low. I'm afraid your gonna drag that off on a twig or something before you ever leave the driveway.

You can tell I did the wash/powerwash in the dark with all the marks where I didn't wipe down but thought I did. But I will be hitting it with compond at some point before I wax it or possibly clear it once I talk to my painter friend about it.

Thanks, I actually traded some parts I had for it so my investment was $0

Got it from the same guy I bought project #1 from...he drove the truck that had this motor in it for a while before pulling it out in favor of a big block. Should give me decent mileage with it being a basic 350 with 4bbl quadrajet. Going to swap the rear to a 307 I have from my 1970 shoestring build truck....has rebuilt drums, new brake lines, and wheel cylinders, etc....

People as Johnathon mentioned I was there yesterday this truck is in really great shape. The usual places we find rust he is clean, needs a very small floor patch rockers are tight inner fender under battery box needs a small patch but the battery box is very good, go figure!! He will need a set of fender cups but the fender ar fine otherwise. I love going to see him I only owe him $60. for this visit. It seems like evfery time I go there he has something I can't live without.

Need some opinions on the bumper....got the piece of aluminum off and put a white bumper I have on....and primed and painted the rear bumper matching white....though i'd love it and I do....but my wife hates it...

She had me show her a chrome bumper and polished bezels. Then she was nice enough to hold it while I took a picture...I am actually really liking it and thinking I need to find some "patina'd aluminum rings now as well....I have a soft factory windshield rubber with the trim I could use when I replace the windshield...and leaning towards chrome dog dish caps (looking for them in driver's shape...or worse ) so I might put the chrome one on....

Thoughts/opinions?

Pictures show the "engineering" (angled spacers) used on the old "bumper", the new bumper (wish the patina on the inside was what showed ) and a picture of the foglightsi removed (po said they were off an old pontiac grand prix
