If you put the column where it belongs, with the little tab on the brake pedal mount, in the correct slot in the column, the NSS wont fit.
, not the right way to do it as the column's lower shift bell would have to be right up tight against the dash bezel with the lower tube out of its locating tab. Mel

Here are a few more labeled side by comparison shots to check out, both of the pictured van tilts have had the N/S-B/U switch moved/modded to the correct truck postion.

Re: Restored Auto Tilt Column

How is everyone making the van "splined shaft" shorter,... to match the length of the oem truck shaft?
Cut and weld?

Yes you can do that or find an RV tilt which many have the same length steering shaft as a truck..

Although fairly common today with several of the column guys and most if not all of the restored GM "TRUCK TILT" columns listed in the big name parts catalogs, I am not a fan/believer of this cut and re-weld the lower inner shaft method. Dont get me wrong, the one's that are cut, welded and then collared over the joint with each end of the collar welded back to the inner shaft would be plenty strong if done correctly, but most I have seen are just but welded back together w/o a collar or sleeve. I feel if a guy wants the real mccoy "TRUCK TILT" and has paid the money for it, he should get what was paid for and not some cobbled together piece that could put someone's family in harms way if it failed. Re: Restored Auto Tilt Column

why not cut, shorten and reweld the shaft up high and not have to respline it. thats how gm did it. next time you have one apart look at the upper end of the shaft. it will have about a 2" area that has been turned and useally blued from heat. thats where the 2 pieces were welded together and then the weld turned down

It's a liability issue. Cutting and re splining takes the risk of bad welds out of the equation. GM spent millions of dollars to make sure they were good welds. It would at least need to be done by a certified welder. Let a weld brake and cause an accident, the lawyers would have a field day.

Re: Restored Auto Tilt Column

how much pressure is put on the weld as you turn the wheel, even if you dont have power steering. it would have to be a really crappy weld to break under normal use of turning the wheel.

Yes... I have done plenty of butt welds in my day. Also worked as a glazier for 10 years. 6 years of that employed at one of the largest glazing companies in the midwest. If anyone is interested in seeing some of my work please feel free to look here http://www.yourascent.com/the-view/p...px?section=All. This building was designed by Daniel Libeskind, a world renowned architect known for his ground breaking asymmetrical buildings which seem to defy gravity. He was also chosen as the lead architect with the design of the monumental new World Trade Center Project. Me and my brother welded frames attached to structural tubed steel for every high end balcony on this condo and hand set every panel all the way up to the 27th floor penthouse.

True, but I've seen some really crappy welds done by people who think they're doing a good job. Add that to the fact that you cannot inspect it because it's inside a column. It's just not really worth the risk for what, a hundred dollars or so?

Hey buddy, Just wanted to check in and say hi. I recognized that building you worked on right away.Awesome structure. When I go to Cincy to see Reds games it is next to the Roebling Bridge which was designed by Roebling before he did the Brooklyn bridge.
(I trust my bed supports are still safe. I promise to get over to you on my way to Cincy for a game)
