Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

stock 350 hp / 327 with m21 & 12bolt / 3:73's. It can be a handfull on wet streets here in Seattle. First gear can be tricky, but 2nd scares the hell out of the local ricers.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

How much horsepower? Well, I could probably pull three horses with the right trailer if it had electric brakes.

I've got a mild 302 with a 350/327 cam and small heads. I'm lucky if it's near 270 at the wheels. I disagree with the idea that you can't have too much power. This truck is mostly stock and it already has more go than stop, and more push than turn. Yeah, I built a lot of vehicles like that when I was a kid. But these days I realize luck probably kept me alive more often than skill. Keep the power level appropriate for the chassis and the area you're driving.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

I just picked up a LQ4 yesterday and plan on giving it a mild stroke to 408 depending if it needs boring. The LS motors have a lot of interchange parts. I'll put on L92 heads and a LS3 intake with the MSD Atomic LS EFI system to get rid of the rats nest of wiring harness. Behind it will be a 4L80 and Dana 60. I'll be towing a Jeep over the mountains and want to have enough power. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. At least to my wife.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

1974 truck 4 bolt 350 bored to 355 ci. Has a cam, aluminum intake, Qjet, ram horn manifolds. Stock it is listed as 160hp and 250tq, so maybe 200 with the cam and improved intake?? Previous 283 w/ 292 cam and 4 bbl did fine, I am hoping this motor will have a little more low end torque.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

I know I will have more horsepower than I need. Running an automatic will help keep the tires on it. The big difference will be the modern EFI. We'll be living at 7000 feet starting next spring. I'll be towing from 0 to 10,000 feet so the extra power will be nice. Hopefully the 4L80 will be able to hold together.

The price on the LS truck motors is about the same no matter what the size except for the lone big block. For $800 it was hard to pass up on a complete 6.0 vs. the smaller sizes that sell for the same amount or more.

250 inliner bored .040, healthy cam, milled head, rechambered, lump ported, Z28 dual springs, 202 intakes, balenced etc running a heated clifford 6=8 with a Holly 390, stoveboltengines cast headers into 2.5 inch all the way out. MSD HEI with 10mm Live wires a K&N filter and it gets 20 mpg highway, has enough torque to pull our camp trailer and supposd to be a 200 hp combination wich is enough for me .

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

My 6000# Avalanche has a 5.3L w 4L60E, GearVendors & 4.10 gears - Plenty of GO

My 4500# SSR has a 5.3L w 4L60E & 4.10 gears - even more GO

My 3500# 57 GMC has a 5.3L 4L60E, GearVendors & 4.11 Gears - Way MORE GO if it hooks when I get it on the road.

What I'm saying is power to weight ratio and traction are key to how much is to much.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

I have no idea what mine would dyno at but it is a 350 with flat top pistons, camel hump 2.02 valve heads and a decent cam. 700R4 tranny and 3.73 gear with 29x15.5 tires. Hooks up great with the 4 link. Plenty of power for the street and cruises down the highway all day long with no issues. Also does a pretty good burn out but tires ar just too expensive for that.

I disagree. Turbo engines are usually very docile when not in the loud pedal.

LOL. What?

I drove 150 miles in the pouring rain on PowerTour a couple years ago, on bald drag radials, with ~500 rwhp. No drama.

400 hp is barely adequate, IMO. But I'm a HP junky.

Yes, a 275/60/15 will fit. My wheels were only 8 inches wide, but they fit great and hooked amazing. Prior to the Mickeys, I was on a BFG Radial T/A. From a 70 mph roll, I could stab it and go sideways when the turbo lit, The DRs calmed that down a lot.
[EDIT: Sorry, just noticed this was in the 47-59 section...hit "new posts" and assumed it was in the "racing and performance" section...if you can fit the tires, use them]

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

As far as power, with the stock 5.3 (at the time) and a smallish turbo, my '69 C10 was ~500 rwhp judging by trap speed.

More than enough to hang with and beat "supercars", and still drive to work. The viper edged me out this run (although I was reeling him in) but I got him later that night.

My setup in the blazer will be around 800 rear wheel hp. Hooking that one up will be more of a challenge.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

Traction is key to Power

My 4200# 56 GMC Suburban Pick up w 389 Ponco & 4 speed Hydramatic w 3.55 open Diff just smokes the 1 tire and goes no where, All that power and no go.

Once rolling torque does all the work at lower rpm in this truck.

Besides anything over 70 MPH is just too noisy and sucks fuel.

Damm, I must be getting old

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

My 383 motor is around 480-500hp. Should be fun on airbags & 4 link and skinny 245 tyres and a LSD ( positrack ) it is being build for a cruiser that when i want can step on it and get some smoke happening.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

I've got most of the pieces for a .040 over 396 that was going in the 48 but it will get the 68 292 with not a whole lot of horsepower.

My 57 Panel had a 327 with 12.5 Jahn's Pistons, Engle solid lifter cam and 202 heads with a Corvette Dual 4 setup on it and it would pull the front wheels when launched hard but I got tired of constantly having to work to keep it tuned to the max. I have no idea of the horse power but it would stay with a 750 Honda bike for a city block in a street race. These days I am more interested in having the 48 set up as a reacher that can burn up highways for hours on end to far flung places.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

the 327 was the first gm motor available with 1 hp per cubic inch
not sure what yrs that was available, i bought a 67 camero with a 327/327hp

truk had the 140hp 350 in it when i bought it in the 80s, even then it was a tire smoker
these trucks are very lite, especially out back
