Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.
Subscribing to this thread to keep getting the updates! Liking where this build is going cause its unique..so many people under estimate the inline 6 and do what EVERYONE else does.....throw in a 350. Nice to see yer being unique! lol But yes...I understand about budget builds. lol Mine is one, but I'm also stubborn...I'll save as long as it takes to get what I want. lol Cause if you don't restore your truck that way you want it you'll never be happy.

Little up date. Picked up some 66 hubcaps. Pretty rusty but nothing a little tig and silicone bronze couldn't fix. I cheated n used a little Bondo. There on a 4x4 so I left a few dent. Gives it character. Hope yall enjoy.

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.
Lots of updates. I'm like the scatter brain of all build threads sorry for the out of order. frames primed and painted with industrial enamel. Trans done. Transfer case in middle of repair. Rear axle just needs bearings and seals.

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.
So the t case had a bad idler shaft. The helical cut gear was where the bad wear was. So I filled In the shaft splines with a hardened stainless rod and re machined it. That stainless s@#t is tough stuff. I'm putting the re machined splines in the straight cut gear. That gears seems to just Hum when driving. Looks like the helical gear took alot more abuse. So by flipping the shaft, problem solved. Took 50 years to get this way..figured I'll be 70 by the time it's that bad Again. Annnnd my buddy's say I'm crazy for fixing that. Pfffff.

All of these are seek peeks of what's to come. Part of my job. Is doubling as a machinist so I have access to vertical mills and such. early 60s c80 grill insert with a 62 gmc grille. Going on the 65 and just scored a 61 apache hood today.my favorite Hood on these trucks.

But forgot. 292 head being ported and ready for port lumps. Doing all the work myself. Running 1.94 intake. And 1.5 exhaust. Thinking of up sizing the exhaust tho. Custome side covers. Doing the 292 power in the early Chevrolet script. And front axle is 90 percent done.

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.
and the grille. Well the Chevrolet portion had to be shortened about 5 inches from stock. I wanted it to look stock but with a twist. Love the gmc twin headlights. They just look mean. Either way. I'll put up the welded pics. i Ended up Using steel rod to fill. And silicone bronze on the thin edge. just gobed it on at about 20 amps. Worked great. After finish sanding just needs primer n paint. And nothing puts my mind at ease like the lake. Just me the fish and gods country hope everyone enjoys.

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.
your doing a beautiful job!! my extra t/f case has the same problem as yours had. you can take the idler gear and rock it back and forth on the shaft. must be a common ware point.
and again very nice job.

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.
Thank you very much! It is definitely encouraging to have someone say that. I'm hoping that the splines hold up on the road for a while. I know at low speeds it will be fine. But not sure about 50-55 mph Or when towing I'm planning to pull a goose neck now and again. I'm just so happy to keep the original running gear. Makes it a 1965 Truck. Not a 1965/1978/1988 ect ect hahaha but thank you.

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.
Little update.put on the restored locking hubs. And Got the GMC grill fitted to the grill support I like the fit. Looks like the headlight housings may be a tad close to the Sheet metal. Oh well nothin I can't work with. Hopefully after I get over this darn cold I will make an attempt to get the 292 motor yanked and on a stand to start rebuilding.

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.
I love this build! I like the fact that you're using what you have available and making it better. I really like the GMC grille with the Chevy script, too. You're putting together a truck that'll look so factory that even the experts will stop and scratch their heads.
You and I have the same mindset. It's more fun to cut and modify factory stuff than it is to open up a catalog and order a part. A lot cheaper, too. It also means more when somebody looks at your stuff and they do a double-take because they've never seen a part like that before and they think it's factory. It's fun to mess with people!

Sand blasted the backs to the grill and shot gloss black. Turned out awesome.
